COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Hoppier, maltier and with more alcohol than a standard IPA, Hercules Double IPA definitely is not for the faint of heart. Hercules Double IPA is, however, an elixir fit for the gods. A brash but creamy wonder, Hercules pours a deep orange-coppery color, forming substantial lace in the glass. Hercules Double IPA delivers a huge amount of piney, floral, and citrusy hop aroma and flavor from start to finish. A hefty backbone of nutty, toffee-like malt character balances Hercules’ aggressive, punchy hop profile. 85 International Bittering Units (IBUs).

12-oz bottle. Great Divide is a fantastic brewery with an excellent variety of tasty offerings. I have also had this beer on tap, so I was looking forward to this bottle with gusto. Very malty with caramel and apricot syrup. A bit bready as well. Citrus and peach in the aroma. A beautiful pour with a thick white head and a rich amber color. A lot of lacing. Thick and creamy on the palate. Almost heavy. Surprisingly, very little alcohol burn. The hoppiness of the beer is undeniable, but the bitterness is so moderated by the malty flavor up front that the bitter finish is welcome and necessary. Drinkable, but not a beer I would session because of the high (and disguised) ABV and (to be honest) the cost. But you get what you pay for with this beer. Big flavor. Excellent.

BOTTLE 355 ML from Bov. Bottled 24-SEP-2014. Red-amber slightly hazy with tan smallish head. It is hoppy enough after the pour, with notes of sweet citrus and mango, menthol candy, but after a couple of minutes the malts totally dominate - lots of caramel and marmalade. The taste is malty right from the start, overly sweet fruit with a touch of alcohol and a somewhat harsh moderate bitterness. Not bad, anyway.

Aroma is nice: orange, lemon, grapefruit, grasses. Appearance: dark yellow orange. Above avg. White head. Taste: lots of pine. Offensive. Grass, hops. Fruit in the aroma is blocked by the overly strong grassy/woody character. Lively carbonation. Ok. An unfortunate product of the IPA craze.
