English-style Old Ale. Hibernation Ale is Colorado’s original strong ale -- it has been Great Divide’s winter seasonal each year since 1995. Hibernation’s massive flavors are so intense that it requires over three months of aging each year. This lengthy aging process gives Hibernation its revered malty richness, complex hop profile and hearty warming character, which is perfect right out of the bottle or cellared for longer periods of time.

A- Pours a beautiful, ruddy brown hue with light brown head. S- Dark fruits, raisin, fig, brown sugar. T- Really solid old ale. Lots of dark fruit, pronounced brown sugar, hints of roasted malt. M- Medium/Thick with ample carbonation. D- A very nice example of an old ale that is extremely drinkable. Nothing crazy here but a good example of the style.

Doesn’t hide the alcohol at all. A powerful beer all around. Strong malt and hop taste with notes of chocolate and barley blended. Overall a very good beer.

2012 Bottle. Aroma has changed and is picking up more coffee and chocolate notes. The sweet port aromas of the new bottle have been erased. The taste is very similar. The new bottles have a quick hit of alcohol and some port, sticky malt and grape flavors, but this has totally mellowed out and drinks very smooth. Awesome after a couple of years in the cellar.

Pour is red with copper tone and a thin beige head. Nose is a bit green, strong messy malt and some malt sweetness. Not overly strong nose with a hint of booze. Taste is more green, malts are a bit unorganized with sweetness battling toasted almond. Booze in the finish with a medium to full body and lots of carbonation making it feel a bit thin in The finish.

Poured from a 12oz.bottle into a pint glass. The color is a dark maroon with a finger of foamy off-white head and some slight lacing left on the glass. The smell is roasty and is slightly mixed with a burnt matchstick aroma with some malty sweetness that is there in the background. The taste is also a bit roasty with some bready toasted malt flavor. There is a creamy flavor that take coats the pallet in sweet malts. There is some earthy goodness that makes this beer an interesting winter type beer. The feel of this beer is medium bodied and is smooth going down but does have some interesting creamy feel to each sip. Serving type: bottle 04-04-2011

12 oz bottle. Pours dark amber with a pencil thin sandy head. Caramel and nutty aroma. Robust malt, rich flavor. Smooth but full-bodied. Mildly hoppy. Buttery and bitter aftertaste.
