English-style Old Ale. Hibernation Ale is Colorado’s original strong ale -- it has been Great Divide’s winter seasonal each year since 1995. Hibernation’s massive flavors are so intense that it requires over three months of aging each year. This lengthy aging process gives Hibernation its revered malty richness, complex hop profile and hearty warming character, which is perfect right out of the bottle or cellared for longer periods of time.

Big beer I always enjoy the release. Malty and big. medium mouthfeel. Crisp and dry. Balanced with subtle spicy and dank hop profile. Minor butterscotch hints. Great winter warmer.

Pours a dark brown with half a finger of head. The aroma is musty and sweetish, almost Barley Wine-like with sweet malts, raisins, dark breads and some iron in the background. Flavour is drier than expected but with some sweetness at the back. Full bodied with roasted notes and a nice kick of hoppy bitterness towards the end. Very long finish.

Aroma is sweet roasted malt. First taste is sweet with roasted malt tones. Clean mouthfeel like a porter. Finish has sweet slight alcohol burn. The alcohol is hidden very well. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours dark, muddy, hazy brown. Aroma is rich with toffee, chocolate, toast, malt, light citrus in the back seat. Flavor is toasted malt, slighly burnt, light bitter, some licorice on the back end. Medium co2. Medium body. Very good.

Backlog. On tap at Green Lion Inn. I have a hard time with winter-seasonals in general, this is a decent example.

A- Pours a beautiful, ruddy brown hue with light brown head. S- Dark fruits, raisin, fig, brown sugar. T- Really solid old ale. Lots of dark fruit, pronounced brown sugar, hints of roasted malt. M- Medium/Thick with ample carbonation. D- A very nice example of an old ale that is extremely drinkable. Nothing crazy here but a good example of the style.
