English-style Old Ale. Hibernation Ale is Colorado’s original strong ale -- it has been Great Divide’s winter seasonal each year since 1995. Hibernation’s massive flavors are so intense that it requires over three months of aging each year. This lengthy aging process gives Hibernation its revered malty richness, complex hop profile and hearty warming character, which is perfect right out of the bottle or cellared for longer periods of time.

It’s a winner in every category-a memorable English farmhouse ale made for aged cheddars and roasts. My favorite aspect of this one is the balance between the fresh, bitter hops, malty molasses and anise spice flavors.

Keg at BD Shepherd’s Bush tap takeover, London. It pours a dark copper, almost brown color, with a medium beige head. Aroma is sweet and lightly spicy, with notes of caramel, egg, lactose, nutmeg and dried fruits. Taste is again sweet, lightly roasty and malty, lightly spicy. More notes of lactose, dark chocolate, dried fruit, nuts and nutmeg. Finish lightly bitter and warming, with some alcohol kick. Medium to full bodied with creamy texture and good carbonation. Overall, nice old ale

Keg at brewdog bar, Leeds. Brown ale with white head. Smells farmy and of pigs! Aromas of nice toffee and tea. Taste is bitter and a little sour. Medium carb and body. Ok stuff.

1/2 pint @ brewdog bar. Body is dark red brown, head is medium creamy beige average lasting excellent lacing. Nose is roasty, aroma is roasted peanuts, coffee, licorice, soy sauce. Light sweet, heavy roasty bitter. Finish is long lasting roasty bitter, light alcohol warmth. Full body, sticky texture, soft carbonation. Not too easy, excellent dessert beer.

12oz bottle, bottled 10/2/14. Appearance: Dark brown and opaque with hint of ruby. No head. Aroma: Roasted coffee along with leather, toffee, and caramel. Taste: Deep rich malt sweetness with flavors of caramel and molasses, raisins, chocolate, leather, and a hint of peppery spice. Mouthfeel: Medium body with little carbonation. Not quite the viscosity and alcohol warmth. Finish: a slight roastiness and dry peppery spice lingers on the tongue. Overall: A really complex ale perfect for those cold winter nights.

From a 12 oz bottle with a bottle date Sep 17, 2014. Consumed 01/03/2015. This pours a murky brown, a little bit of light coming through at the edges, with a 1-2 finger light light tan head. Looks like muddy pond water. Aroma is caramelized sugar, toffee, butterscotch, bready. Taste is where is thing just took me back, yes there’s the toffee, but there’s bittersweet coffee, slight roasty chocolate, and this thing other thing, reminds me of walking into a cigar shop, just wet tobacco. It doesn’t sound pleasant, but it’s killer in this beer. It’s a medium beer, heavier side of medium. Old ales aren’t a great style for me, tend to be pretty one note, but this was exceptional in the style. Love that tobacco.

12 oz bottle poured. Pours a dark brown color with a bubbly head. Smooth rich malt flavor with a nutty finish. A lot of flavor in this one, and it lingers forever. Subtle hops throughout, as well as some brown sugar, maple, and a little chocolate. Aroma is a ton of sweet malt. I nice warming beer here. Enjoyed this.

Keg at BD Sheps Bush. It pours deep red-brown with a medium beige head. The nose is rich, toasty caramel, fruit cake, raisin, wood, toffee and leather. The taste is smooth, toasty, bitter-sweet, caramel, light alcohol, leather, varnish, earth, mild spice and cocoa with a dry finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Smooth, well rounded and quaffable. Very good.
