English-style Old Ale. Hibernation Ale is Colorado’s original strong ale -- it has been Great Divide’s winter seasonal each year since 1995. Hibernation’s massive flavors are so intense that it requires over three months of aging each year. This lengthy aging process gives Hibernation its revered malty richness, complex hop profile and hearty warming character, which is perfect right out of the bottle or cellared for longer periods of time.

Poured from bottle into a pint glass. Strong malty aroma with sweet fruits, honey, and a bit of spice. Taste is driven by toffee and caramel sweetness with a touch of woody bitterness at the end. More carbonation than I expected in the palate, at a bit too much for my liking. Overall, a very nice warming winter beer.

355ml bottle. Dark brown body with a medium white head, leaving loads of lacing on it’s way down. Aromas of roasted malt, wood, nuts, dark chocolate and spices. Malty taste, with notes of dark chocolate, roasted malt and honey.

Draft at Root Down (Denver airport, C concourse). Reddish brown, minimal foam. Nice winter seasonal, malty coffee, toffee, in a traditional strong ale.

Pours dark brown with a great beige head. Hints of toffee and coffee in the aroma and a very malty taste. I guess this beer is what it should be, but I’m not a fan of the style.

I wonder how true to style this is an an old ale. It’s a nice winter warmer. Has the flavor profile of a toned down/light barleywine.

Aroma here is raisins, nuts and toasty malts. The flavor is very down to earth and malty. There’s a lot of malt variety in this one and toffee with bready tones compete through this with the hops up on the spectator stand with a bucket of popcorn sitting this one out. There’s a short burn from the alcohol in the end, but not disturbing.

Mild roasty noise. Dark copper-brown, thin off-white head. Hop bitterness mixes with alcohol and spiciness. Some malt sweetness, but the hops shine through. Nice complexity. Decent carbonation, a little smoothness is evident.

12 oz bottle poured into glass. Heavy malty aroma with little head on it. Tastes very malt forward. If malty is your thing, this is a go to.

Bottle @ home. BF 2013-10, aged two years. Pours a brown liquid with a tan head. Aroma is dominated by round roasted notes, delicate milk chocolate and coffee with balancing fruity raisins, caramel & syrup, hints of herbs. A bit vineous. Smooth mouth feel with medium to big body, refreshing carbonation. Roasted, sweet and fruity taste with chocolate, coffee, vinous raisins, plums, toffee, malty sweetness, caramel, spices, orange, licorice. Hints of vanilla and leather. Warming alcohol. Lasting balanced and assertive bitterness, and lingering notes of orange zest, raisins and soy.
