4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Great aromas of aged oak, smoked barley, and roasted brown sugar. Deep crimson brown in appearance with no foam. Fresh hop assertiveness with complex flavors of herbs, caramel, clove, barley and wood. The finish offers a bit of a creamy caramel/oat flavor with a heavy alcohol sting. Overall, it’s really well done. Fantastic complexity and heavy on the booze. I’d give this an A+ rating.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
2012 bottle (I cant believe I never rated this before... had numerous times): Deep mahogany hue with a fizzy but mostly lasting head, spotty lace. Earthy rich bready malts, toffee and caramel apples, a hint of tobacco and wood with a splash of rocky minerals. Still some minty and herbaceous hop bittering left that should fade with more time. The mouth feel is not has heavy nor comporting as the best of the genre, seems too carbonated for an Olde Ale. Still this is a baby and should progress with 2 or 3 more years in the cellar.

Tap at New Bohemia in Northeast Mpls. Bumped pint glass. Deep amber in color with really limited head. (Not a great pour) Aroma has hops and a nuttiness that is appealing. Little bit of tropical fruit. Taste leans towards the sweet side of the equation with a syrupy, dark fruit element. Slight bitterness at the end. Soft mouthfeel. Very solid effort. Taste has an enjoyable sweetness that really feels like it complements a cold, crisp night. Hibernation seems like the perfect name. I would cuddle up in my pajamas and drink this all night.

Tap at new bohemia in pint glass. Light mahogany color with small white head. Roasted malt and darker aroma. Sweet and sugary malt resin. Not exactly what I expected. Kinda sweet and pruny. Didn’t love it.

Drank this last Christmas but have saved a few bottles, so why not crack a 355ml bottle tonight. Dark brown-black, slightly tan, creamy head. Sweet and hoppy aroma, it smells of dark syrup, apricot, leather and pine needles. Rustic flavor, roasted malt, sweet fruits, apricot, mango. Bitterness of chocolate and coffee. At the end, bitter from pine needles. Several great flavors, great enjoyment in this.
