Commercial Description:
English-style Old Ale. Hibernation Ale is Colorado’s original strong ale -- it has been Great Divide’s winter seasonal each year since 1995. Hibernation’s massive flavors are so intense that it requires over three months of aging each year. This lengthy aging process gives Hibernation its revered malty richness, complex hop profile and hearty warming character, which is perfect right out of the bottle or cellared for longer periods of time.

on tap @ Plan B Simsbury. The first thing I noticed about this one was how dark it was, a lot more than i thought. Very easy to drink although I will say that it got a little annoying towards the end of the pint. nice malt butteriness and little carbonation, good hop balance, one of the best winter ales ive had, GD didnt try and go over the top like some other breweries do, they just make great beer, and this one is a perfect example of that.

Bottle... Poured deep, almost opaque, reddish-brown with a thick, fluffy, tan head. Roasted grains and toasted oats on the nose. A whole lot of alcohol warmth on this beer. Full, thick palate. Lightly hopped with sweet oak tones and big malts. An acidic finish with a tart aftertaste.

Tap. Red brown pour with very nice lacing. Aroma is booze and malt. Taste is very malty, with nut and a hop bite. Pretty creamy texture.

Pours a reddish orange with nice carbonation and little to no head. Sweet, heavy malt followed quickly with piney hop notes on the nose. Definitely taste the alcohol and not as sweet as the nose would make you think. Flavor evolve and become complex as you let the beer warm. This was a great beer when the temperature was below 20 degrees outside.

12oz bottle:
Appearance: Dark copper/ruby red with a nice tan head with some lacing
Aroma: Caramel, roasted nuts and sweetness
Taste: Sweet malts, roasted nuts, alcohol and bittering
A good beer, especially on a cold night to warm you up....

Pour of a dark red from a bottle. On the nose, there is a very strong and sweet oatmeal presence. Lacing on the glass is very sticky, much like an adult movie. Oatmeal comes through on the initial sip, with a few oats making an impression. Body is medium/heavy, akin to syrup. The taste is rich with some very strong malts with a sweetness that is not overpowering of the rest of the beer.

Pours out amber with lots of creamy head. Taste is sweet malt and bitter hops. Roasty and sweet toffee flavors upfront with some bitterness from the spicey hops. Great caramel and spice notes. Good balance crisp and complex. One of my favorite holiday brews.

Leathery malt aroma. Clear chestnut color, thin yellow head, good lacing. Harmonious boysenberry and leather flavor. Not one of my favorite styles, but unique and tasty.
