English-style Old Ale. Hibernation Ale is Colorado’s original strong ale -- it has been Great Divide’s winter seasonal each year since 1995. Hibernation’s massive flavors are so intense that it requires over three months of aging each year. This lengthy aging process gives Hibernation its revered malty richness, complex hop profile and hearty warming character, which is perfect right out of the bottle or cellared for longer periods of time.

Bottle. The pour was a clear medium to dark brown with an average sized (1-2 finger) creamy light brown head that stuck around for a little while leaving behind a slight residue which clung to the sides of the glass creating some fair lacing. The aroma was of a toasted caramel malt, a mild touch of resin hops and a sweet earthy yeast with notes of dark fruit and molasses. The taste started out moderately sweet and a bit malty with a hint of caramel and molasses then worked itself into a more distinct bitter sour flavor with a definite note of dark fruit and a strong alcohol presence at the end. The dark fruit flavor was left lingering on the taste buds for a nice long while after the swallow, along with an slight alcohol warming sensation. Mouthfeel was just about medium in body with a almost syrupy texture and a mild carbonation. Overall an impressive tasting brew, one with nice sweet fruit flavor that was off set nicely by the slight alcohol tinge it possessed.

Pours red amber with big creamy head. Aroma is cocoa, coffee, toasted malts, dark chocolate, resin hops, liquorice, nuts and rasberry. Flavor is medium to heavy malts, medium bitter, pleasant finish but rather short. Body is medium, palate is oily, carbonation is average. Very pleasant, clear distinctive taste. One of the best beers I’ve ever had.

Thought this was a winter seasonal but recently found a single, dark amber pour, nice big tna head. Aroma is earthy, very old-school, earth, herbs, grass, dark fruits. Flavor is medium boozy, toasted malt, earthy tones, light hint of cocoa and roast, this is killer.

2012 bottle (I cant believe I never rated this before... had numerous times): Deep mahogany hue with a fizzy but mostly lasting head, spotty lace. Earthy rich bready malts, toffee and caramel apples, a hint of tobacco and wood with a splash of rocky minerals. Still some minty and herbaceous hop bittering left that should fade with more time. The mouth feel is not has heavy nor comporting as the best of the genre, seems too carbonated for an Olde Ale. Still this is a baby and should progress with 2 or 3 more years in the cellar.

Tap at New Bohemia in Northeast Mpls. Bumped pint glass. Deep amber in color with really limited head. (Not a great pour) Aroma has hops and a nuttiness that is appealing. Little bit of tropical fruit. Taste leans towards the sweet side of the equation with a syrupy, dark fruit element. Slight bitterness at the end. Soft mouthfeel. Very solid effort. Taste has an enjoyable sweetness that really feels like it complements a cold, crisp night. Hibernation seems like the perfect name. I would cuddle up in my pajamas and drink this all night.

On tap at New Bohemia. Dark red color with minimal white head. Sweet hoppy bitter mix aroma. Heavy body. Sweet hoppy upfront with a slight bitter finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
