English-style Old Ale. Hibernation Ale is Colorado’s original strong ale -- it has been Great Divide’s winter seasonal each year since 1995. Hibernation’s massive flavors are so intense that it requires over three months of aging each year. This lengthy aging process gives Hibernation its revered malty richness, complex hop profile and hearty warming character, which is perfect right out of the bottle or cellared for longer periods of time.

Bottle. Darkish amber with big tan foam. Aroma is chocolate, butterscotch, citrus and sweet dark dried fruit. Taste is similar to the aroma;chocolate, caramel, butterscotch and piney and citrusy hops. Mainly a sweet beer but with a nice citrusy bitter aftertaste. Full body, creamy and sticky texture, soft carbonation, bitter finish that gets a tad astringent at the end. A little alcoholic is noticable but not disturbing and only adding to flavor complexity. Overall; I like this a lot, malty , citrusy and the way I love my american beers

Flaska från systemet - En väldigt maltig doft. Mörkbrun med beigt skum. Brända toner som påminner om en stout. Värmen från alkoholen känns i eftersmaken.

Bottle (12oz $2): Murky brown with one finger tan head. Can’t figure out what I am tasteing other than its rich and a good balance of malt and hops with slight bitterness in the end. Very drinkable.

Poured from the bottle of a six pack to the pint glass. Looks brown with a twinge of red, not much foam, smells sweet. The commercial description of "malty richness" is accurate. I taste some hops, and is not overly sweet, which I like. Won’t spend a lot of time trying to categorize this one, will just say that it is good. Gets extra points for being extra strong. Four or five of these and I’ll be headed into hibernation.

pours dark amber. Very interesting soil/peat moss nose. Toasted malt aroma comes through as it warms in the glass. Taste is dominated by toffee and licorice. With this the winter will be easy to get through.

Couldn’t wait for this beer to return to the shelf. One redeeming thing about the onslaught of winter.

12 oz bottle, poured into a snifter at approximately 40 degrees F. A: Pours a deep ruby brown, forming a relatively thin pale white head that recedes quickly to a ring. Holding the beer to daylight reveals an exceptionally clear red-brown brew with decent streams of carbonation from the bottom. Lacing is persistent, if a tad patchy. S: Toasted, warm caramel-toffee malts, with the smells of warm peat moss and damp potting soil mixed in as well. There’s a tinge of smoke, and some shadows of dark fruit. T: At the start, this was smoky, earthen, and definitely peaty, a bitter brew to drink. There was sweetness present, but entirely subsumed by the soil, bark, and ashes, with something of a black licorice tinge to the finish. As it warms, the bitterness fades to allow more of a balance with the sweeter, breadier malts - entirely my fault, I should have started this one out warmer. Caramel and toffee play off of the smoky earthiness, and allow some faint undertones of dried dark fruit to skitter about the distant reaches of the palate. There’s also more of a light coffee note to the finish. M: Surprisingly light-bodied, with prickly carbonation levels. O: With the first few sips, I was unimpressed with what seemed to be an unbalanced beer. That opinion changed upwards in correlation with the temperature. Would repeat, and at cellar temperatures.
