COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Hoss is based on the Märzen lagers of Germany. Rich, layered malt notes, with some hints of cherry and dark notes, dominate while the unique addition of rye imparts a slightly earthy, spicy character. Hoss finishes crisp and dry, and its brilliant red-orange color is a toast to the late-summer sunsets that make the perfect backdrop for this beer.

This was definitely a unique beer, with a very earthy/spicy quality to its taste. Pours with a blood orange color, and hints of dark fruit in the nose and flavor.

Draught at the brewery. Clear body, golden orange. Not much aroma, some rye bread. Very dry taste and nice spicy finish.

Pours a clear amber-orange with a thinner off-white head that, when swirled vigorously, produces a finger or so of slow settling bubbles that leave small splotches of lacing. Cool nose with spicy rye and hop notes, some light caramel, touches of fruitiness and resin, along with some almost savory and slightly tinny lager yeast notes. A fair sweetness with a more pronounced bitterness. Medium-light body, softer side of active on the carb, a touch oily and creamy, with a lingering toasty drying bitter finish. Layered and crisp, indeed. A nice, flavorful brew with a lot of nice elements that blend together well. It’s very drinkable, but should be properly savored.

On tap at Petrol Station. Pours a dark copper with small frothy white head. The aroma is rice, grain, and malt. Medium moutheel with sweet hop and light malt and dry finish. Good.

Bottle at home. Clear amber, average head. Rye bread aroma, with caramel and toast as well. Really nice balance, bitter and spicy finish, the rye shines through. Well put together, and a nice twist on a marzen.

12 oz bottle, Whole Foods. Medium dark orange-ish red; one-finger rocky-foamy head dissipates into a light ring and an almost negligible covering; light lacing. Aroma malt, toast, caramel, pepper, spicy red fruit (cinnamon??). Sharp but not overpoweringly bitter; solid malt up front for a lighter beer balances this surprisingly well; bread/toast here as well, and spicy pepper; finish is dry and crisp, slightly acidic. Mouthfeel is a little foamy but fuller than expected; reasonably slick and light to moderate sticky. I wouldn’t buy a sixer of this just because it’s so mundane, but this is a really well put-together beer within the style. Pleasant surprise.

12oz bottle. Pours a clear light amber color with a slight off-white head. Aroma of honey and a mild malty sweetness. Taste has some earthy hoppiness, honey, bread, rye, and a touch of caramel.

Tap sample. Clear deep copper color with a small head. Mellow caramel nose, with malt, faint spiciness and minor earthy hops. Sweet malt flavor, with caramel, honey, some candy and low bitterness. Medium body, not very balanced and the rye is barely noticed. So so.

Bottle from South Bay Liquor: Appeared as a medium colored amber hue with a thin layer of foam up top. Aroma is all malts and suggests caramel and the smell of bread. The flavor was smooth and true to the German Oktoberfest style of Marzen with a moderate malt profile yet easily quaffable. I wasn’t exactly thrilled with how much this six pack cost for a beer this ordinary though.

Poured out of a bottle at home. Has a red-golden color. Tastes earthy. Thin layer of head remained throughout the drink.

Aroma is earthy with a hint of cherry. Pours red-orange with a thin off white head. Very earthy flavor from the rye with a touch of cherry. Finishes dry and smooth. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
