COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Hoss is based on the Märzen lagers of Germany. Rich, layered malt notes, with some hints of cherry and dark notes, dominate while the unique addition of rye imparts a slightly earthy, spicy character. Hoss finishes crisp and dry, and its brilliant red-orange color is a toast to the late-summer sunsets that make the perfect backdrop for this beer.

My favorite Marzen! Usually I find this style of beer to be overly malty, fairly simple, and lacking enough hops for balance. But this one is complex with hints of cherry, and a unique flavor from the rye. I don’t find the rye to be spicy, but "earthy" is a good description, and I taste some raisins in there too.

Clear copper to dark amber pour with a 1 finger off white head. Aroma is toasty grain, pale caramel, light nutty notes, spicy grain and spicy, herbal and floral hops. Flavor is caramel and toast up front, nice cereal, floral and citrus hops and a little cracker/bready malt. Light to medium body, creamy to neutral entry, medium carbonation and off dry, crisp, yet slightly slippery finish. Good stuff, definitely on the assertive side for a Märzen, but good.

Pours copper with a small lasting head. Nose shows rye bready, sultanas, caramel, bready malt and hints of spicy cedar. Creamy, nutty flavours with some bready malt too. Quite sweet.

POurs a light amber, golden pink. Typical short head light lace. Aroma is like an Oktoberfest malty but with a hint of spice, not much else minerally and a bit of sweetness caramel malts. Taste is minerally Oktoberfest, citrus and toast dry malts hint of orange and light fruit.. Smooth velvety, dry toasty bittersweet caramel, citrus, light herbal light pine. Not big on marzen and I just read description of how this is marzen based , wow I guess I know my beer sometimes! Rye is not real great on this and not really into it in a lager like this although its a decent beer.

"as a rye beer, this is quite good, although the rye is subdued. but, classified as a marzen, it’s epic. i don’t get the low balls. it’s rich in both flavor, aroma, and body for the style, with a dry earthy rye finish that adds another layer to a pretty straight forward variety. super super high drinkability with the touch of rye atop a toasted malt profile. very nice, and better than i expected!"

Nice amber/orange pour with an off white head. Earthy malts with a piney/citrus hoppy aroma flavor. Malts tend towards almost doughy in this one. Nice medium body, interesting beer.

Aroma of rye bread with light roastiness and wet soil. Flavor is clean and clear with some caramel and clear rye presence. Aftertaste of Russian rye bread. Reminds of home.

On tap poured into a sampler glass. Notes of tangerine, grains, and a cleanser-like citrus peel come through on the nose with notes of lemon zest and pine. It pours a hazy caramel red color with a soapy white head that reduces to a soapy thin surface with a medium soapy ring. It leaves behind a light webby lace consisting of even, small-sized bubbles. The taste is a medium sweet with a medium bitter, the bitter seems to stand out a bit more. The slick, oily textured beer has a medium malty, citrus body with a moderate fuzzy carbonation. There’s a strong orange and grapefruit flavor in the mouth with notes of toasted grains, dry rye bread, and pine at the finish. There’s a citrus zest that appears with some pine in the aftertaste.

Draft at Good Dog. Poured a clear orange amber with a quickly disappearing head. Lots of dark caramel breadiness. Burnt tangelo peels. Pumpernickel. Notably dark and juicy - but the huge bready Marzen flavors are not particularly pleasant for me. No subtlety. Some rye spiciness. Feels like being pelted aimlessly with loaves of dark bread. Can appreciate some work went into this but it is simply not working for me. Cannot really recommend.

Bottle to glass. Pours a darker copper color, little head. Aroma is caramel malts, toast, rye and a bit of biscuit. Taste is slightly spicy, a bit of pepper and lots of toasty malts. Faint fruitiness. A bit of caramel, not too sweet. Palate is medium body, medium carbonation. Pretty enjoyable!
