3.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
12 oz bottle into a pint glass.
Pours a clear dark copper, with a finger of rich light tan head. This retains with a smooth creamy layer that leaves a nicely laced glass.
The rye shares equal billing with the malts in the aroma. A touch of spice and bread back them up. It’s a pleasant aroma, but subdued.
The taste is mosty sweet on the tongue, with a mix of bread, toffee, and light fruit. Some balancing earthy hops mix with the spiciness of the rye to finish this with a satisfying dry ending.
The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a slightly astringent creaminess. There is just enough of a light sharpness to the carbonation to keep this crisp in the mouth.
I don’t have a lot of experience with this style, so I can’t comment on it’s general quality. It is a very tasty brew. Refreshing and complex at the same time. A nice beer.

Bottle. Pours a reddish-amber color with white head. Grainy, peppery, caramel aromas. Spicy, grainy, malty flavors. An interesting take on a rye version of marzen. Not bad.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Has the rye spiciness you expect, only over a mellow malt instead of aggressive hopping. Clear amber color, has a still, cold look to it. What a blast the flavor is. The lightly roasted caramel malt mixes with the rye for an almost smokey effect. Dirty bitter is how I’d put it. Crisp and almost a little rough, seems a touch stronger than it is. A real winner, even if only for lack of competition.

UNIQUE! How many other Märzen-style rye lagers are out there? (I’d love to have more to compare to this brew.) As it is, this is crisp, refreshing, subtly spicy, and doesn’t have the offensive over-hopped bitterness that everyone is pretending to like these days. Somehow this lager conveys a primitive, unpretentious authenticity that takes one back to Bayern festivals of centuries past. I fell in love with it over there on Arapahoe and miss it dearly.
