ChainGangGuy (2522), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Jan 4, 2009 Appearance: Pitch black body under a small, though dense, persistent, tan-colored head. Creamy, glass-coating lacing throughout.
Smell: Aroma of fully roasted malts and oak wood with appropriately roasty notes of licorice root, instant coffee, and unsweetened chocolate.
Taste: Dark, roasted malts tasting of slightly sweet dark chocolate, smoky creosote, and a half-shot of espresso. A smooth, drying oak character hits the palate midway through and slowly increases towards the finish. Tiny bit of vanilla and licorice. The citrus and pine hoppiness found in the standard Yeti seems to be diminished considerably by the oak, but there’s still plenty of balancing bitterness to be found. Smooth finish with a delicate lingering oakiness. Everything from the roasted malts to the oak character to the hops are full in flavor but, thankfully, are never glaring or excessive.
Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium carbonation. Smooth, creamy mouthfeel.
Drinkability: Though certainly not always the case, I do prefer the oaked version over the standard. A full, flavorful beer that makes for pleasant sipping. timfoolery (482), California, USA Dec 30, 2008 Bottle from BottleTrek in OR. This aged Imperial Stout ranks up there with the Speedway Stout. There was a great mix of vanilla, deep chocolate, and coffee to round off this brew. The palate definitely benefits from the barrel-aging process, along with adding character from the oak. I will buy this one again. Excellent, excellent thick beer. Just typing about it makes me want another. gotohelunc (473), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Dec 30, 2008 Bomber. Pitch black color with a nice solid tan head that stays on the beer the entire time. Extremely rich nose, very roasty. The flavor comes across like the richest, strongest coffee I’ve ever had. There’s a bit of an alcohol burn that combines well with the roasty flavors to warm the whole body. If I could get a coffee that tastes just like this, I’d be a happy man. KieferUGA (461), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Dec 29, 2008 22 oz. bottle. Dark black pour with a large, dark tan head. Nice hoppy aroma, with hints of chocolate, oak, and some coffee. Smooth, silky mouthfeel. Flavor is a real treat. Dark chocolate notes mix really nice with the light oak notes. Finish is bitter with a touch of licorice. Really great beer for the price. mgoy (343), Oak Brook, Illinois, USA Dec 29, 2008 Great Divide Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout is not as enjoyable as the original. The head of the Oak Aged is smaller and quicker to dissolve. The aroma is a bit stronger and better, but the flavor is more intense and bitter. The increase in flavor throws off the balance and leads to a less anjoyable drink.
Coffee, chocolate and tons of roasted malt describe the aroma and flavor. ScottB (73), Bristow, Virginia, USA Dec 28, 2008 Pours thick and black with a rocky, brown head. Sweet and chocolatey with a generous hoppy bitterness. Excellent. jmm635 (249), Havertown, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 21, 2008 Pours completely black with a creamy brown head. Very nice lacing, marking every sip that was sadly now gone. Strong aromas of coffee, chocolate, alcohol, and a faint oakyness. Flavor is similar, but less chocolate and less of an oak flavor. Palate was tremendous! Full-bodied, thick and syrupy, but unbelieveably smooth! To date, probably the most drinkable stout I have had. aguyintx66 (78), Humble, Texas, USA Dec 20, 2008 Bottle. Poured black with a tan head. Aroma of roasted malts and wood. very smooth on the palate. Tastes of roasted coffee and caramel with a nice bitter finish.
