BrotherGrendel (545), San Diego (La Jolla), California, USA Aug 23, 2008 Purchased at Tops Liquors in Tempe last winter, consumed in Scottsdale last week.
Appearance is a dense brown hue, thick tan creamy head sustains, foamy swaths of lacing trickle down the sides.
Smell is moderate roast malts, dark fruits, light chocolate and coffee, anise, brown sugar/molasses, vanilla, wood, cherries, and moderate alcohol.
Taste is initially dominated by roast malts/ dark fruits/ vanilla/ alcohol, midway enters chocolate and coffee malts, heavy oak wood tones dominate at times, finishes with dry sweetness and light booze.
Mouthfeel is full-bodied, creamy smooth texture, lively carbonation.
Drinkability is moderate, decent example of the IRS style but the malts are lacking in body and boldness, dark fruits and wood flavors are somewhat overwhelming, good overall taste profile, I would like to see how this compares to the non-oak version of Yeti. BeerBunker (599), Burbank, Illinois, USA Aug 22, 2008 Pours black with a large brown head. Head never seems to dissipate. Strong aroma of roasted malts, wood, and for some reason tobacco. Very well balanced for all the different flavors that come out as you drink more of it. Closer to the finish, the taste is of strong alcohol and chocolate. This is definately a huge beer, and it needs to be enjoyed as such. Perfect winter beer. Zbong (38), Lansing, Michigan, USA Aug 21, 2008 22 oz bottle. Pours black with very little brownish head. Coffee, some chocolate, oak and smoke tastes. The key to this beer is how its so easy to drink. Would buy more often but expensive ($8.00 a 22). Great beer. stobbe74 (655), Denmark Aug 21, 2008 Bottle, 22 fl. oz. Pours a black beer, with a brown head. The aroma is roasted with some licorice, tar, wood and notes of coffee. The flavor is complex and balanced, with notes of sweetness, roasted malts and wooden barrels. The mouthfeel is nice and finishes bitter with a lasting sharpness. A very nice imperial stout, one of my favorites. Fulkrum78 (165), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Aug 20, 2008 An overall amazing beer. Definite oak aroma with a brwonish head. Black as can be. Warms you up when you drink it. Great for sipping. dpjuart (670), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 19, 2008 Draft at Great Divide Tap Room, Denver, CO on 8/12/08. Pours black with dark khaki head, nose is roasted malt and chocolate, coupled with a slight fruitness that’s subtle in nature. Taste is roast and mild chocolate, dry and very bitter. No astringency. Slight oak and vanilla, good alcohol burn with very little alcohol flavor. Straight deliciousness. shanepardue (107), Raytown, Missouri, USA Aug 18, 2008 Pours black with dark brown head. Woody sweetness flavor with a good amount of IBU (higher than most stouts I’ve had). thickfreakness (130), AUSTIN, Texas, USA Aug 18, 2008 Pours a very dark brown/black with a creamy mocha colored head that lasts a while and then leaves a nice bit of lacing on the glass. Smells predominantly of Vanilla/Oakiness and chocolate with some roasted malts and coffee sneaking through. The taste didn’t quite live up to the smell in regards to complexity but it had a nice lingering hoppy finish that was quite unexpected. A nice mouthfeel but I like my RIS’s a little thicker and a little less carbonation. Overall, a great easily available RIS that I indulge in often.
