Phil (100), Kent, England Feb 9, 2008 Shared @ DIPA Fest, Hayward. Yup, another big US impy stout. I gather this was first batch. A pleasant change to the hoppy brews that were on offer today, I would have loved to have tasted this side by side with the beers last night. Approaching the perfect balance of wood and beer, where the use of oak hasn’t been over done. Not overly hoppy, but still very American. Ian, you’d love this. Threw nice dark mocha head, typical roast notes, long finish, and great aromas... even vanilla. Good stuff. CP (124), USA Feb 9, 2008 I’m sorry I just don’t get it. There are much better beers out there for this to be ranked so high. This reminded me of BORIS the crusher somewhat. I found myself tiring quickly of the taste and alcohol content. I probably won’t bother to try the non Oaked Aged. Bells Expedition is far superior in every category if you are looking for a wild imperial stout. thooper41 (384), Oregon, USA Feb 9, 2008 22oz bottle: pours black as motor oil with a thin brown head that fades fairly quick. aroma has of chocolate and malt with hints of some type of spice. flavor is well balanced chocolate with just a ever so slight hop bite. i was left looking for more from this beer its flavor wasnt as full as i had expected from a imp stout. its good none the less but its no ABYSS. RomanW70 (297), Providence, Rhode Island, USA Feb 8, 2008 Updated: May 31, 2008Pours pitchblack with a thick tan head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, and dark malts. Taste of chocolate, roast, molasses, wood, and alcohol. Has a big bitter finish. Can detect the oak. A big, impressive beer. Guinness4Duff (507), Tallahassee (and Poconos, PA), Florida, USA Feb 7, 2008 Pours a thick black with a thick dark brown head. Aroma is sweet roasted chocolate, caramel and coffee. Has a sweet and bitter chocolate taste with an outstanding burnt flavor to finish it off. This is an outstanding beer. AmEricanbrew (1747), Louisiana, USA Feb 6, 2008 Black with a thick tan head, nice lacing. Strong cedar/oak sweet smell with blackened malts. Full bodied and smooth. Great taste is of semi sweet chocolate with vaniila, coffee and blackened malts. A rich, smooth stout here with only a light touch of oak in the flavor. 9505 JCB (1713), Durham, North Carolina, USA Feb 5, 2008 Surprised to see that I hadn’t rated this. Eh, it gives me a good excuse to buy another bottle! And it’s as rich, thick, and delicious as I remember, if slightly hotter and more boozy (I don’t recall finding fresh bottles quite so slammin’ before). Regardless, this one deserves its high ratings and might even rate higher if, oh I dunno, they only made 500 bottles a year, dig? It’s that tasty, with a big roasted stout that’s satisfying on its own holding down the foundation. The oaking is refreshingly subtle, and well integrated, giving just a slight gloss to the abundant chocolate malts and making the beer even better than the already impressive Yeti. Superb! pepsican (883), The Student Ghetto, Iowa, USA Feb 3, 2008 black with a thick tan head. Aroma is hoppy, chocolate and coffee are also present. Hops, coffee, chocolate, toffee, and vanilla. I was expecting a tad more oak presence. Very creamy, slightly carbonated. Very nice.
