mixinnixon2000 (227), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jan 16, 2008 this is a brilliant brew. very dark in color and the aroma is powerful. I wish I could drink this beer more often BMan1113VR (2752), Los Angeles (and Dallas), Texas, USA Jan 14, 2008 Really good, although I am not sure if it is better than the regular (it has been a while since I have had the other one). Aroma is chocolate, pine, vanilla, oak, milk, brown sugar, cinnamon, and maple syrup. The color is darkest black and it poors with a smallish dark brown head that has excellent lacing. The taste is great and lasts forever. It goes down creamy smooth with lively carbonationl. The alcohol is well hidden. angrypirate06 (678), Texas, USA Jan 14, 2008 Updated: Apr 29, 2009Deep black pour. very chocolatey aroma. Very hoppy, with hints of coffee. Nice acidic bite at the end. Overall, decent beer. Not sure I agree wit the average rating, but to each his own.
RERATE:
Opaque black body with a gorgeous foamy dark brown pour. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, smoke, caramel that ends in an excellent floral hoppiness. Perfect blend of chocolate/coffee/hops for an impy stout. Flavor: WOW! Coffee, then the oak sweetness, chocolate, followed by some nice hop bitterness and finishing with a great coffee flavor. I love the various stages of this beer. Excellent creamy mouthfeel. BigMilly8 (374), Holiday, Florida, USA Jan 12, 2008 From bottle : Pours a deep dark black color, with a half finger of medium dark brown head, that slowly disappates leaving wondeful lacing. Nose of big time roasted malts, chocolate, and alcohol. Taste is nice. Roasted malts at the outset, that turn to chocolate and some hints of oak (which get more prominent as the beverage warms), then finishes with a expresso feel, and a alcohol warmth. Aftertaste is roasted expresso and alochol. Quite thick on the body, with a big time oily feel in the mouth. Pretty good IS. 17thfloor (1402), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jan 11, 2008 Updated: Dec 12, 2008Pours a thick oily dark dark opaque brown with a thin fine light brown head, beautiful silky lacing. Smells of sour grapes, vanilla, oak as it warms and chocolate, different. Almost like a sweet stout, very rich. Lots of ripe sweet fruit, tobacco and dark bitter malts. Its got both extreme ends of the spectrum and none inbetween, the malt is about as dark as it can get. Very full bodied and creamysmooth, the carbonation lightens it up just enough to be a drinker and not a sipper. Bitter darkchocolateflavored fruit and hoppy finish. The oak aging adds a very nice dryness, yum, this is a sweet stout I really like. 8 5 10 5 19.
2008 bottle with new label 12.12.08. Pours a very dark opaque near black woody brown with a big thick tan frothy head that fades into a small cream. Wow. I dont remember an Impy Stout ever smelling like this before, huge piney hops, dusty shaved chocolate, toasted coconut, vanilla, buttery oak, peanut shells, and light burnt molasses. I dont remember it tasting like this either, thats a shame. First taste is toasted coconut and buttery oak, light chocolate, vanilla and roast. The hops in the background add an interesting citric quality that play nicely off the oak. Too much oak for that matter... thats the main flavor overshadowing the dark roastiness. Very smooth both, fine fluffy carbonation, even consistency. I remember it differently, and I also think I liked the old labeling better also.

This beer poured a relatively deep black. Aroma was champagne-y, with some chocolate and lots of roastiness. Flavor was a weird sourness with chocolate notes and a rich maltiness that reminded me of drinking malt syrup (which I didn’t care for). Mouthfeel was full and pucker-y.
Despite my lack of agreement with other reviewers, I’d still recommend this beer. agillespie81 (190), Denver, Colorado, USA Jan 10, 2008 Very dark......opaque. A creamy, thick head. Powerful aroma. Strong oak flavor up front, with hints of sweetness soon after. A smooth, creamy mouthfeel. Finishes very strong, yet smooth as well. hombrepalo (726), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jan 9, 2008 22 oz bottle, poured a really dark blackish brown color, brown head, quickly fading. Smells like vanilla and molasses, with some hints of alcohol. Taste like vanilla / oaks/ minimal hops/ syrup molassas. Smooth, no bite, guess its the stout part of the beer. just confirmed that I don’t like stouts, too flat. But I thought I’d give stouts another shot again with a good one. To me stouts are overrated!
