The_Beer_God (2838), Newport News, Virginia, USA Mar 3, 2005 Bottle. Thnaks to JCapriotti for this! Sturdy mocha froth atop starless midnight. Roasted malt, big coffee, dark bittersweet chocolate, light hoppiness, and light woody notes. Taste is BIG coffee and chocolate with sweet roasty maltiness, pleasant hops, light vanilla and wood. Body is thick and creamy . Very slick and oily in parts. Some stickiness lingering as well. Finish is more coffee, light alcohol, dark chocolate, light hops, vanilla and fresh cut wood. Excellent beer! I need a case of this!
pik5el (44), Pasadena, Maryland, USA Sep 5, 2008 Very thick almost pitch black pour with very small dark head. Big flavor of roastiness, oak, molasses, espresso and bready malt. Very appropriate and not overpowering mouthfeel. amish_caravan (210), Winona, Minnesota, USA Sep 2, 2008 pour is very black. scent is of burnt roast and malts with some alcohol smell as well. taste is of coffee and burntness. oak can be tasted as well. very smooth finish. awesome beer. I would purchase again. IlanMan (531), Winona, Minnesota, USA Sep 2, 2008 Pour is thick engine oil black with a small dark tan head. Aroma is of sweet malt, caramel, oak, light coffee, chocolate, and a light burnt character. Can you say complex? Brew is very full bodied with a strong oak and toast character finishing with more sweet malt, toffee and strong hops right at the end. Very smooth mouthfeel and a dang good brew. With further review, I get a hint of coffee in the flavor as well. I wouldn’t mind having this brew around for a few more years to see what happens. I’ll be looking for this brew again! EHopper (129), Minnesota, USA Aug 31, 2008 Drinking this is like eating those incredible delicacies at the state fair. Something like bacon, dipped in chocolate, battered an deep fried. So many incredible flavors, each one decadently good in its own right, all put together. Fantastically good, but only in moderation. But there is actually a kind of internal moderation. Each great but overpowering flavor seems to cancel the others out so that no one overpowers the other, or you. ansermadide (188), Kyle, Texas, USA Aug 31, 2008 (Sample from December 14, 2007 Beer Club Meeting; Bomber with ice cream with weeAnaP on August 24, 2008) HUGE brown head… STILL huge! Fantastic lacing. Bubbly, looks like a wheat pancake on the stove. Oaked malt aroma with molasses. Flavor is VERY well done. Lacing follows all the way down the glass as you drink. Very warm on the tongue. Spicy finish from the alcohol. Creamy, smooth, full-flavored, round on the palate. Delicious with ice cream!
