Commercial Description:
Old Ruffian is a hefty, hop-forward Barley Wine. Seemingly mellow at first sniff, with its subtle fruit aromas and complex caramel sweetness, this deep mahogany-hued ale quickly shows its true character marked by bold hop flavors and massive hop bitterness. Old Ruffian’s rich, slightly creamy, caramel malt mouthfeel balances its grapefruit, pine, and floral hop flavors, working wonders on your palate.
A mind-numbing 90 International Bittering Units (IBUs).

22 oz. bottle, from slob, thanks man! Pours clear dark garnet amber with a huge off-white head that leaves ample stringy lace. Aroma of caramel, toffee and ripe fruits, including orange, apple and nectarine, spicy pine as well. Rich, sweet malt character with a huge bitter hoppiness as well, ripe summer fruits, toffee and brown sugar, grapefruit rind, pine oil, white pepper and an alcohol burn. Smooth, full body and gentle, tingly carbonation. Very nice beer for a malty hophead!

Bottle. Aroma of sweet malt, lots of dry, bitter hops. Some crushed berry fruitiness. A nice woody component. as well: pine, oak and cedar. Pours rich amber with a frothy off-white head. Definitely on the bitter end of the barleywine spectrum. Lots of oily pine and heavy, grassy bitterness. All is balanced well by the requisite amount of sweet, sticky caramel malt. A hint of creamy, sticky peanut butter as well. Full bodied, fairly creamy with good carbonation. Finishes quite dry.

Dark brown with some red and a large white head. Nose is sweet with hints of fruit. Taste is somewhat hoppy, though not as much as some others. Hardly any alchol present. Mouthfeel is sticky with light carbonation. Good BW.

Sampled from 22 oz bottle. Hazy brown pour shows a little head for once. Smell shows brown sugar and sherry (that word again!). Not much alcohol heat for such a strong beer. This may be a cellareed bottle, it shows a less pronounced hop blact, in fact, closer to an english barley wine. Finish is a bit too bitter.

Pour is a brown with a very large tan head. Aroma is very up front with the hops but also has a smooth caramel malt that hides in the backround. Flavor is syurpy sweet at first then comes the caramel malts and finally POW the heavy dose of alcohol. Finish is smooth and has a lingering flavor. A very good spot on barley wine.

Pours an orangeish red color with a lot of very nice head. Very fresh scent, full of hops and citrus, as well as some floral and pine. Also, maybe a little sweeter tones, like brown sugar or caramel. Very bold, up-front flavor filled with its floral hops, but the malt comes through very nicely and finishing with an alcoholic tinge. The beer seemed to cover the inside of my mouth and stay there. This was a very nice beer.
