Commercial Description:
Old Ruffian is a hefty, hop-forward Barley Wine. Seemingly mellow at first sniff, with its subtle fruit aromas and complex caramel sweetness, this deep mahogany-hued ale quickly shows its true character marked by bold hop flavors and massive hop bitterness. Old Ruffian’s rich, slightly creamy, caramel malt mouthfeel balances its grapefruit, pine, and floral hop flavors, working wonders on your palate.
A mind-numbing 90 International Bittering Units (IBUs).

Dark amber in color. Sweet yet not thick. The high level of hops helps to balance this and dry the palate out.

Bottled. Thanks xnoxhatex for this bonus. Deep amber-red color with a milky tan head. Ends up in a nice swirl coating the surface after a while. Robust aroma of pear, toffee and hops. Caramel dominates the flavor with a generous nose of brown sugar, rum and pine resin notes. Good hop profile with plenty of bitterness. Finishes chewy and smooth, I think the high alcohol needs to be more hidden though. Good brew.

Dark brown with a pillowy white head that leaves generous lacing on the glass. Aroma is of hops and vanilla. Flavor is not overpowering with hops, but rather gentle with a nice balance of caramel sweetness and the alcohol is well hidden. The finish is clean, like a smoother version of 90 Minute IPA. Overall this is absolutely wonderful.

Bomber - Poured a dark reddish copper in color with a Medium light tan head. Some nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is hoppy with also some nice nutty maltiness. Some alcohol noted as well. Flavor is nicely balance with sweet, caramel malts and *plenty* (hop forward?) of citrus and pine resin hopiness. Alcohol is present, but muted, behind the hop bitterness. I really like this beer and hope to repeat soon!!

22 oz bottle. Pours a dark copper with a bold head with abundant lacing. Sweet caramel malt nose with a fruity backbone. Taste is sweet maltiness balanced nicely with citrus and pine. I’m amazed it is 10.27%, you can feel the some alchohol warmth but not that much. Creamy and smooth palate with a nice bitter finish. Damn good barley wine.

bottle, $6.19. Aroma is hopps and fruity nutty malts. Notes of resin, caramel, dried fruit. Large off-white head that mostly diminished but left fantastic lacing. Dark mahogany hue. Big flavor and the finish is bitter. Complex notes of port, alcohol, resin, and citrus. Palate is a little soft and full bodied but the alcohol does come through in this brew. A good one but not in the same class as that old foghorn I just had.

A very lovely, very intense barley wine. Bold. A kick ass beer that you just nurse while watching the Lions lose in the middle of fall.

Pours out a deep red with a thick but quickly dissipating head. Chocolate malt aroma that gives way to an impending hop explosion. The hop aroma is much more pungent then floral. Big chocolate malt taste that is struggling to balance the huge amount of hops. The hops are big and spicy and just tingle on your tongue until they fade away and leave a grapefruit dry bitterness in the aftertaste. This is a big bold barley wine that is not the type of beer you want to give your light beer drinking buddy for his first taste of a real mans beer.
