sliffy (1966), Columbus, Ohio, USA Oct 12, 2006 Bottle: Dark brown pour with a medium off white head. Aroma of caramel, brown sugar and some pine. Flavor, smooth and malty up front with some bitterness coming through nicely on the finish. A little earthy on the tail end. Pretty good beer. hophead75 (1945), Boonton, New Jersey, USA Oct 11, 2006 Updated: Oct 12, 2006bomber split two ways. Pours a deep amber/copper with a fairly large off white head. Sticky lacing with medium carbonation. Aroma is sweet caramel malts with some citrus and pine hops. Taste is big and full, sweet caramel malts and pine hops up front, citrus and sweetness throughout.....Finishes nice and bitter. Full bodied and syrupy on the palate... strings (361), Sydney, Australia Oct 9, 2006 Bottle. Wow, could really taste the alcohol here. My first barleywine, and certainly intriguing. Barley was very prominent, but I assume that’s normal. A little citrus, and perhaps just a tad too bitter in the finish for me. MikeHernandez (50), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Oct 8, 2006 Updated: Dec 24, 2006This is my second favorite barley wine. It has sweet caramel malts with citrus as well as other hop flavors. I did not find the hoppiness overbearing. In fact I felt as though this barley wine was surprisingly smooth and easy drinking despite having a 10.2% ABV. lgklotet (420), Singapore, Singapore Oct 8, 2006 (Bottle at Stockholm Beer Festival)
Holy crap this is a powerhouse of a beer. Flamboyant and hysterical... it screams inside my mouth. I want more.. oh6gdx (8798), Vasa, Finland Oct 3, 2006 Bottled. Nut brown/amber colour. Aroma is alcohol, plum, spices and a lot of fruit. Flavour is spices, plum, raisins and candy sugar. Almost like a mediumsweet Madeira wine. Svesse (2597), Hässelby, Sweden Oct 2, 2006 (Bottle, Stockholm Beer Festival, 30 Sep) Dark amber colour, slightly hazy, with a beige frothy head. Very complex nose with loads of caramel and toffee (a bit like the smell in the kitchen when mom made "knäck", Swedish Christmas toffee) , notes of rubber, with intense, piny hop aromas emerging after a while. Initially full caramel and toffee taste, turning into loads of flowery, citrussy, piny hops in the bitter finish. Very warming. Lots of different aromas and tastes, but strangely enough the balance works. Lovely stuff. jimvy (131), O’Fallon, Missouri, USA Oct 2, 2006 On tap at the Great Divide Brewery Tour 9/28/06. Aroma is awesome--strong hops, strong malt, some alcohol notes--almost like a triple IPA! Dark copper color, good clarity, good head retention. Flavor is a really good balance of hops and malt, though bitterness dominates the finish. Alcohol evident. Long lasting flavor. Body is medium-full. Warming. Overall, a very good american barleywine. Maybe a little too much bitterness in the finish, but still very good.
