Commercial Description:
Old Ruffian is a hefty, hop-forward Barley Wine. Seemingly mellow at first sniff, with its subtle fruit aromas and complex caramel sweetness, this deep mahogany-hued ale quickly shows its true character marked by bold hop flavors and massive hop bitterness. Old Ruffian’s rich, slightly creamy, caramel malt mouthfeel balances its grapefruit, pine, and floral hop flavors, working wonders on your palate.
A mind-numbing 90 International Bittering Units (IBUs).

Bottle courtesy of Daalamar: Poured a burgundy color ale with a small off-white foamy head with average retention. Aroma of sweet caramel malt with some noticeable bitter hops. Taste is a well enough balanced mix between sweet caramel malt and bitter hops. Body is above average but could have been more full and alcohol was well hidden which is great. Overall, this was quite enjoyable and would love to have more in order to aged some of it.

22oz bomber; Nose of caramel, plum fruitness, and a little hop note; color is cherry-amber with a small beige head; flavor of caramel with fruit, then the hops hit with a good deal of bitterness that slowly trails into an alcohol burn finish!

Bottle sampled with Stegosaurus. Pours brown with a tan head. Aroma of caramel and hops. Flavor is caramel, loads of hops, and alcohol. Drinkable, but not a good barley wine.

Deep amber/ruby. Decent head and lace. Nice nose of sweet caramel malts, fruit notes, citric hop, resin, and hints of alcohol. Medium bodied, hops invade palate immediatley, good malt backbone cuts into them for a few moments. Fairly creamy feel in mouth. Powerful resiny and bitter finish. Good but I enjoy other examples of the style more. The bitterness of this one gets fatiguing but as it warms (along with you) the flavors meld and become much more enjoyable. This is why I have a hard time rating from samples, I usually need the whole beer to rate properly.

Nice beer. Poured amber, thick head. Very hoppy, citrus, fruity aroma, some pine, but plenty of malt to balance it. Flavor is the same, hides alcohol reasonably well. My second great divide beer, and boy is it good.

(Sampled from bottle, thanks Marsiblursi) Clear red brown color, white to tan head. Big mouthfeel and very high bitterness, too high for me. Sweet and aclohol scent, mixed with bitter hops.
