3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle from Beer Bazaar. Feb 20, 2015 bottle date. Reddish amber pour with very little head. Aroma has sweet and sour fruits, tangy pine, caramel and spices. Taste is of sweet fruits, stone fruits, tangy pine and some spices, led by some tangerine, all on a solid caramel backbone. Medium bodied and sticky with alcohol. Finishes sweetly fruity, tangy and long. Amazed never rated back in the day when certain it was in the Excursion full of smuggled CO brews, and enjoyed since. Tasty brew that hoppier/fresher, would describe as an American Strong. 14.3

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Pours a rich deep red with a dissipating off white bubbly head. Fair amount of lacing around the glass. Aroma of sweet caramel, pine, grassy, some red fruits. Taste is of more caramel, red grapes, woody, hint of strawberry and cherry, fruity. Medium carbonation, smooth oily mouthfeel. Lovely.

4.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
Barleywines can get a little rich for me, so Iím definitely partial to the well-hopped variety. With 90 IBUís I think itís safe to say Old Ruffian falls into that category.Yet, Great Divideís brew tastes mostly rich and malty to me. Maybe itís the big grain bill and 10.2% ABV. Maybe it was the 9 months of age my bottle had. Whatever the reason, notes of molasses, dark fruit, and toffee stood out most clearly to me. Some resinous, citrusy hop notes show up in the aroma, but I didnít notice them in the flavor profile as much until I paired Old Ruffian with a Butterfinger. (Butterfinger and Barleywine is one of my olí reliables when it comes to pairing.) Reminding me of Averyís Hog Heaven, Old Ruffian shows that big hops and big malts can share the same hallowed space. And the warm booze... I thought Old Ruffian was going to put me to sleep before I was half-finished with the damn thing.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle, pours dark mahogany with a medium tan head. Starts out sweet maybe a little molasses then tastes of pine and grapefruit come in. This one's definitely over my IBU tolerance.

2.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
Bottle into a tulip. Pours a deep, clear mahogany, with a medium light brown head that persists, leaving good lacing. Nose is grassy and citrusy, with a faint whiff of stone fruit. Taste begins with a slight caramel flavor, but the excessive amount of hop bitterness kills any flavor quickly. Extremely bitter and very unbalanced. Would not buy again-a disappointment from an otherwise excellent brewer.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Opaque black with a slight purplish hue and meager sized beige head. Malt, chocolate, red wine, dried cherry, raisin, cinnamon, and nutmeg fragrance. Smooth and creamy body. Remarkably complex combination of flavours consisting of the above mentioned as well as vanilla and syrup. Aged for 2 years which is likely why the hops arenít very prominent, but Iím not dissatisfied in the slightest.

4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle in Baltimore. Clear amber pour, foamy off-white head. Aroma is very thick floral hops, caramel, fruity, piney and reminds me of the great Hercules IPA, which I love. Flavor is a thick bitter body with a huge malt base. Smooth and very solid. Slightly on the bitter side, but still very drinkable. Great Barley wine.
