Old Ruffian is a hefty, hop-forward Barley Wine. Seemingly mellow at first sniff, with its subtle fruit aromas and complex caramel sweetness, this deep mahogany-hued ale quickly shows its true character marked by bold hop flavors and massive hop bitterness. Old Ruffianís rich, slightly creamy, caramel malt mouthfeel balances its grapefruit, pine, and floral hop flavors, working wonders on your palate.
A mind-numbing 90 International Bittering Units (IBUs).

Bottle from Beer Mongers in Portland, OR. Bought in 2013. Wow. Upon opening this I am impressed with the amount of carbonation left in the bottle. Very nice. Appearance is a nice dark auburn color with small, light head and wispy lacing. Nose is big sweet fruit and estery hop stuff, very nice! Surprised at how much hop character is still around and after sitting in my basement for 2 years. Taste is bright hops, dried raisans, plummy bits, bit of caramel. Again, very surprised about how much hop character remains in this beer. Very nice. Should have left it in the basement a year or two longer, lots of life left in this one. Would age nicely. Definitely would buy again

650ml bottle forgotten for a while, BBF 01 Feb. 2015. Hazy brown with small tan head. Aroma is cookie malts, caramel, brown sugar, grapefruit, citrus, mango and a leftover hint of dried tropical fruits as well as more of a sensation of warming alcohol. Taste is quite heavily roasted with brown sugar, caramel, cookie malts, grapefruit and dried tropical fruits. Thick creamy mouthfeel, low carbonation and a lasting sweet yetroasted and bitter aftertaste with alcohol warmth.

(Great Divide Old Ruffian ) Bottle 650 ml at home, served into a snifter, ABV 10.2%. BB Feb. í15 Dark red colour on the body, a bit murky with a good sized beige head on top, thick and with good retention. Aroma of caramel, raisins, dates, orange peel, toffee. Taste has malts, caramel, dark fruits, dates, then citrus, orange peel. Finishes with a sharp bitterness. Medium body, carbonation on the high side. Great!

Poured from bottle into snifter. Pours a dark reddish brown with 3 finger thick head that is yellowish tan in color. Aroma is a mix of resin and malt. Taste follows suit, and while this is clearly an American style barleywine, it is still very well-balanced and not just a giant hop bomb. Really nice on a cold night.

Bottle from Beer Bazaar. Feb 20, 2015 bottle date. Reddish amber pour with very little head. Aroma has sweet and sour fruits, tangy pine, caramel and spices. Taste is of sweet fruits, stone fruits, tangy pine and some spices, led by some tangerine, all on a solid caramel backbone. Medium bodied and sticky with alcohol. Finishes sweetly fruity, tangy and long. Amazed never rated back in the day when certain it was in the Excursion full of smuggled CO brews, and enjoyed since. Tasty brew that hoppier/fresher, would describe as an American Strong. 14.3

Bottle. Pours a rich deep red with a dissipating off white bubbly head. Fair amount of lacing around the glass. Aroma of sweet caramel, pine, grassy, some red fruits. Taste is of more caramel, red grapes, woody, hint of strawberry and cherry, fruity. Medium carbonation, smooth oily mouthfeel. Lovely.

Barleywines can get a little rich for me, so Iím definitely partial to the well-hopped variety. With 90 IBUís I think itís safe to say Old Ruffian falls into that category.Yet, Great Divideís brew tastes mostly rich and malty to me. Maybe itís the big grain bill and 10.2% ABV. Maybe it was the 9 months of age my bottle had. Whatever the reason, notes of molasses, dark fruit, and toffee stood out most clearly to me. Some resinous, citrusy hop notes show up in the aroma, but I didnít notice them in the flavor profile as much until I paired Old Ruffian with a Butterfinger. (Butterfinger and Barleywine is one of my olí reliables when it comes to pairing.) Reminding me of Averyís Hog Heaven, Old Ruffian shows that big hops and big malts can share the same hallowed space. And the warm booze... I thought Old Ruffian was going to put me to sleep before I was half-finished with the damn thing.
