Old Ruffian is a hefty, hop-forward Barley Wine. Seemingly mellow at first sniff, with its subtle fruit aromas and complex caramel sweetness, this deep mahogany-hued ale quickly shows its true character marked by bold hop flavors and massive hop bitterness. Old Ruffian’s rich, slightly creamy, caramel malt mouthfeel balances its grapefruit, pine, and floral hop flavors, working wonders on your palate.
A mind-numbing 90 International Bittering Units (IBUs).

2011 bottle. Amber pour with minimum white head. Aroma - hops, lots of hops, sweet malts, caramel. Taste - sweet and malty followed by a nice crisp load of bitter hops, some brown sugar, very smooth, finishes bitter with lots of hops character. For two years old there is still a shit ton of hop flavour on this bottle...a big American barely wine that has aged much better then peyton one ring manning....sorry Denver.

On tap at the Mayor. Appearance: small white film that lasts, clear amber red color, slight lace. Aroma: citrus, floral, light malts. Palate: light carb, light body, sticky texture, bitter finish that lasts a bit. taste: citrusy sweetness moving towards heavy hoppy bitterness. Overall, I love barley wines, and this one is now at the top of the list with the hops. Great beer.

Very different for a barley wine. More carbonation and more hoppy than I usually see, but a very pleasant drink. Mediate key you are hit with the caramel smell and taste, then with the beautiful bitterness if the hops. Creamy, off white head and a good amount of lacing. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from Lazy Dog. Pours medium dark transparent amber with a layer of tan head and nice lacing. Aroma of caramel, wood, and a faint hint of booze. Taste of very dark fruits, roastiness, with a nice accompanying hoppiness.

Pours a deep brownish amber so thick you can’t see through it with a decent white head that dissipates quickly. Aroma isn’t large but is still complex, smells of surprising hops up front followed by sweet fruits, not tropical, lots of sweet malt body, lots of caramel, some floral notes as well. Taste is very drinkable for the ABV and the style, starts with a hop note that is bitter immediately followed by a sugar note which becomes burnt like caramel, it then finishes with lots of sweet fruit and a gigantic malt note. Overall, very drinkable barleywine, my favorite of the style so far, but that is more inexperience than anything else.

UPDATED: MAR 5, 2014 Bottled a month ago. Never had a barley wine before. Took a chance on this, because I love Great Divide. I’m very glad I bought this! Aroma is sweet, caramel, floral, citrus hops. Pours a deep red color, almost maroon. Taste is super hoppy, balanced well with sweet malts. Very big mouthfeel. Somewhat dry, bitter finish. Wonderful beer. Update: Bottled 12/19/12. seemed more boozy and less hoppy a year later!

Draft at the brewery. Pours clear ruby brown with a thin, creamy beige head and some lacing. Tastes like very strong hops and burnt caramel, roasted, vanilla, and malty. Medium body and low carbonation. Smells like burnt toast, earth, and hops

22 oz bomber bottled in dec. 2012. Beautiful light mahogany pour with a tan head. Nice malted backbone with some boozy hops mixed in. A bit bitter for the first few sips, then it seems to mellow out and get extremely tasty. Very nice barleywine.
