Old Ruffian is a hefty, hop-forward Barley Wine. Seemingly mellow at first sniff, with its subtle fruit aromas and complex caramel sweetness, this deep mahogany-hued ale quickly shows its true character marked by bold hop flavors and massive hop bitterness. Old Ruffian’s rich, slightly creamy, caramel malt mouthfeel balances its grapefruit, pine, and floral hop flavors, working wonders on your palate.
A mind-numbing 90 International Bittering Units (IBUs).

Cloudy, dark copper pour. Thin head quickly disappeared. A later, more aggressive pour made for a long lasting tan head. Very heavy, sweet, honey aroma, a hint of floral, perhaps orange blossoms. Lighter on the palate than expected, long, bitter finish. Kind of one dimensional with a sweet beginning and bitter end, not much interesting in the middle. Alcohol nicely hidden. Would I drink again? yes. Would I order again? probably not.

Perhaps one of the most intriguing and best aromas I’ve noted so far. Hoppy with maybe a citrus note? Not overly biting for the style, overall very well done.

Pours a brown orange with light head Aromas of brown sugar and toasted malts Flavors are similar with additional fruity orange and toffee notes. Great especially since this is a tap version

Pours mahogany with a pillowy head and thick lacing. Aroma is very malty and very hoppy. Caramel malt, brown sugar, piney, citrus, pungent. Flavor is thickly sweet with plenty of hops to back it up. Caramel, toast, pine resin, citrus fruit, dark dried fruit, and booze fill the flavor with some other flavors hard to describe adding to the complexity. Full bodied, rather low co2. Excellent beer in every way. Definitely in my top 5 favorite beers.

Picked up a growler of this. Pours a hazy copper/orange with about 1’’ of head and decent lacing. Aroma is strong caramel malt, alcohol and some hops but they are overpowered by the malt sweetness. Taste is initially sweet and malty, a little brown sugar, maybe some molasses, and then transitions to a strong bitterness with pine evident. Medium to full bodied. I really like some of Great Divide’s beers but I am not a fan of this one.

Decadent, dead sexy, near perfection, complex red hop goodness. Wow. So creamy, so rich. Its a big hop, big abv, big caramel malt, no apologies american craft beer masterpiece. I simply dont understand how anyone can not be into this kind of thing. Sharp but sweet green apple pine sap, grapefruit, toffee, velvet caramel, slight hint of bleu cheese, passionfruit, raw cane brown sugar, savory pinneapple reduction sauce, and ripe mango. Perfect mouthfeel. Only thing keeping it from a 5 is an ever so slight saltly medicinal finish. This is why I drink beer...

Bottle that had been in my beer cellar for 2 years. Reddish copper with a fluffy white head and constant bubbles. Nose is tropical fruit and biscuity malt. Taste is fruity and bitter hops. Sweet malt backbone gives balance. Huge alcohol heat. Top of the bottle had more alcohol in the flavor. The bottom was much thicker with malt and more enjoyable.

Sampled at Big Brew Beer Festival (Morristown). Poured a dark amber color with a foamy tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, rich caramel, and old citrus. Taste of bitter grapefruit, rich caramel, roasted malt, and pine.

Draft to taster. Looks solid; a transparent copper with off-white head that steadily dissipates into lacing. Smells mildly sweet and malty. Tastes like it smells, but more robust, with notes of caramel and a bit of hops and toastiness. Average on the palate. Decent, but nothing special by style standards.

Bomber. Pours a ruddy brownish red with slightly off white head. Intial aroma is fruit forward with malt character as well. Hops become more apparent as it warmed. Taste is dark fruit, sweet malt with bitter hops adding to the complexity, some banana notes as well. Only the slightest alcohol warm with a creamy mouthful. Very nice Barley Wine, will look for the Oak Aged variety.
