Old Ruffian is a hefty, hop-forward Barley Wine. Seemingly mellow at first sniff, with its subtle fruit aromas and complex caramel sweetness, this deep mahogany-hued ale quickly shows its true character marked by bold hop flavors and massive hop bitterness. Old Ruffian’s rich, slightly creamy, caramel malt mouthfeel balances its grapefruit, pine, and floral hop flavors, working wonders on your palate.
A mind-numbing 90 International Bittering Units (IBUs).

Appearance: Pours dark amber with light khaki head that falls to an 1/4 inch.

Aroma: Fresh resinous hop nose. Chocolate covered dried apricots, brown sugar.

Taste: Again, fresh resinous citrusy hop goodness. Then comes layers of burnt caramel, brown sugar, toast. Some dark fruit action. All capped off by big hop bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied. A tad astringent. Moderate bubbles.

Overall: If you like hoppy barleywines like Sierra Nevada Bigfoot, you will definitely enjoy this. I’ll go against the grain and say drink this fresh and not bother cellaring it.

Crystal clear, medium copper body with a long-lived eggnog head that sticks to the glass. Strong, sweet aroma of overripe fruits, citrus peel, sweet orange jam and caramel. The taste is pretty heavy sweet that is backed up by a surprisingly heavy bitter finish. The texture is oily to syrupy, the carbonation is soft and this sweet thing does of course have a full body. A lovely and massively hopped beer, but the hop contribution to the flavour and aroma has probably faded quite a bit with storage.

UPDATED: APR 14, 2015 On tap at Black Sheep in Mineola..mahogany pour with off white head..aroma of dark fruits,toffee,alcohol..tastes like it smells..extremely smooth..had to slow down or I would have finished this in 5 minutes..glad I did because I wouldn’t have been able to savor this.

Bottle. Nice caramel colour with a beige head. Thick body, caramel, biscuit, bread, nice hoppy edge. Quite nice.

Poured from 22 oz. bottle after cellaring for 27 months. Not clear, but not really hazy, dark copper brown with a 3-finger khaki head and and very good lacing. Aroma of toffee, caramel, oak, plums, raisins, mandarin oranges, figs, dates, and heaven. Taste of caramel, butterscotch, oak, raisins, toffee, figs, plums, alcohol, mandarin oranges, pine resin and more deliciousness than I can describe. Medium/full body and high carbonization with a mouthfeel that feels so right on you tongue. I had tried this beer fresh a couple years ago and felt it needed some aging to soften the aggressive hops and alcohol. The 27 months of cellaring seems to have rounded it out perfectly. The always generous Chudwick scored a bottle that is slightly older than 6 months old from the seventh layer of hell, a.k.a. Jungle Jim’s (which is really a nice place, I just love sarcasm). I can’t believe I have not rated this as I have had it quite a few times. So suck it ratebeer.

I scored a bottle that is exactly 6 months old at Friar Tuck’s. Bottled on 12/13/13; I’m drinking it on 6/13/14. Old Ruffian has a great rich scent of caramel, toffee, sweetness, plum, some booze, a hard to place leather/woodsy smell and faint hops at the end. Very complex and pleasant aroma - similar to a scotch ale but more high end. Outstanding. Pours a striking dark amber/ruby color which is darker at the top that it is at the bottom. Thin white ring of foam and heavy lacing. Very nice looking. Taste is some hops up front but not sharp or bitter. That gives way to the caramel and toffee that was previewed in the aroma and goes back to hops in the aftertaste but again, not overdone. Perhaps it is the age of the bottle. The palate is full and smooth for a barleywine, it coats your mouth and adds to the aftertaste. This is up there with many of the great barleywines I have had and it is cheaper than many of them to boot. I was surprised at how good this is.

Weak with fruity aroma. The flavor also has a decent fruity taste with a heavy bitterness. Like I preached earlier, one of bitter beer not really to my taste. Bitterness in the aftertaste fills the upper part of the mouth for a long time but feels maybe a little better than I thought at first.
