kepano (239), Meudon, France Oct 28, 2005 Pours an intriguing murky mahogany topped of a frothy beige head. The nose is well balanced blending some sweet malts and fruits to a very hoppy background. Coffee and caramel are well balanced with apple, grapefruit, pineapple, coconut, and some pine. The heavy alcohol content is present in the nose reminding of bourbon which really helps emphasize the hops. The flavor only echoes these fragrances. I’m not a big hop-head, so I can’t say this is my style but I appreciated the effort and the complexity of this brew.
kidmartinek (883), austin, Texas, USA Jun 27, 2009 Intense copper color with a marvelous living head. Heavy caramel malt in the aroma with hops in the background. The flavor is good, but the best part is the palate how it starts off dry and a little bitter and has a small tingle with a a short but powerful carbonation. It’s got some very nice clean oak taste to it too. The haevy malt is well balanced by the intense hops. It comes in pretty tame at 10+% and highly tolerable. The finish is pleasant. Sip this and good times will follow... randolphjj (59), Raymore, Missouri, USA Jun 20, 2009 copper / mahogany color with an off-white head. Malty nose - caramel, (seemingly mellow, indeed...)
Bitterness without a hop resin on the tongue - or really even a particularly big hop nose. Great divide seems to do a nice job hiding high alcohol with solid flavor, and this is no different. mirjukka (659), LOHJA, Finland Jun 14, 2009 keg 330ml 7,5€ shared at Hilpeä Hauki Hilarious American Weeks 170409 deep copper huge beige head strong tangy bitterness and sweet fruity malts sticky body. Very long lasting after bitterness. petematte46 (121), Dallas, Texas, USA Jun 12, 2009 Updated: Jun 19, 2009A pretty solid nose with a nice white frothy head. A little sweet, but it is a barley wine. Great with a little age on it. Overall pretty nice. Fred82 (187), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Jun 7, 2009 Bottle, Mondial 2009. Clear amber with medium creamy caramel colored head. Aroma is big sweet caramel and piny hops. Taste is quite sweet and hoppy. Hints of pineapple. Not much bitterness, really sweet. Nice balance between hops and sweetness. bacummings (21), Alabama, USA Jun 7, 2009 Nice barley wine style ale. Very hoppy. Fruity, I can smell and taste berries. kmeves (1072), Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, USA May 30, 2009 Pours an amber/copper with a small beige head that lasts and also leaves nice lacing. Aroma is moderately sweet with caramel, toffee, grapefruit, pine, raisin and bread. Flavor is caramel, grapefruit, pine, pineapple and light chocolate. Full bodied, very creamy texture. Light alcohol burn in the finish. This beer would improve with age no doubt. tylerss20 (101), New Hampshire, USA May 18, 2009 Now, this is a Barleywine. Piney, hoppy, floral opening. Sweet candy on the tongue, and a wallop of face bending hop bitterness on the way down. Not as crazy as a Bigfoot, but a bigger punch than Old Foghorn. This is a one and done (10%). I had a bomber of this on an empty stomach at McNelly’s and was good to go.
