Commercial Description:
Old Ruffian is a hefty, hop-forward Barley Wine. Seemingly mellow at first sniff, with its subtle fruit aromas and complex caramel sweetness, this deep mahogany-hued ale quickly shows its true character marked by bold hop flavors and massive hop bitterness. Old Ruffian’s rich, slightly creamy, caramel malt mouthfeel balances its grapefruit, pine, and floral hop flavors, working wonders on your palate.
A mind-numbing 90 International Bittering Units (IBUs).

(Bottled) Very hazy dark red-amber with a small, lasting head. Aroma of grainy malt, strawberry. Grainy-malty flavor with some burning alcohol. Almost full-bodied with soft carbonation. Nice, but not as nice as it could be. (Bottled, was 8-4-8-4-15=3.9) Quite clear, very reddish dark amber color with a small head. Grape-fruity, aromatic-hoppy aroma. Fruity, slightly alcoholic flavor with sweetish toffee. Medium-bodied, smooth-carbonated palate. A nice and pleasant brew.

22 oz bottle of 10.2% goodness ...Poured a dark leather brown with a 2-inch solid head. Solid and bountiful aroma of wood chip and hops. All-the-way good flavors of creamy caramel, hoppiness (different for a barley wine) and the syrupy alcohol tone you’d expect. I’m not usually a barley wine fan, but this is a delicious (albeit strong) brew of quality goodness. Excellent.

Dark amber with fine white head. Aroma and taste of alcohol, malts & hops. Those things mentioned dominates throughout. Fine balance between the high hops and sweet malts. Great bitter lasting finish. Great divide fucks it up again, numbness from hops. Straight Power!

Bottle
Wooden oaky, citrus and caramel aroma, topped off with a decent shot pine and citrus hops. Hazy glowing red brown, low creamy tanned head. Intense sweet wooden baseflavor, caramel, burned sugar, perfumed citrus and pine hop notes - all in a somewhat agressive rough mix. It has however a nicely elegant exit with citric hops and candyish wooden notes which carry on a long time afterwards. Chewy body, light sparkly mouthfeel.

Poured a ruby red / dark gold color with a medium sized light tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. The aroma was hoppy, sweet caramel, lots of malts and fruits, and light alcohol. Very complex aroma. Sweet malts, citrus fruits, strawberries, lots of hops, and strong alcohol finish. Very young, but should age with the best of them.

Bottle. Red brown colour with a beige head. Aroma is sweet hoppy. Flavour is very hoppy with elements of roasted coffee and fruit. Very bitter finish.

Murky copper color with no head. Wow... this is definitely a hop head barley wine. Lots of citrusy aroma and flavor. The malt does a good job of balancing it out and keeping it from becoming an IIPA, but just barely.
