Commercial Description:
Old Ruffian is a hefty, hop-forward Barley Wine. Seemingly mellow at first sniff, with its subtle fruit aromas and complex caramel sweetness, this deep mahogany-hued ale quickly shows its true character marked by bold hop flavors and massive hop bitterness. Old Ruffian’s rich, slightly creamy, caramel malt mouthfeel balances its grapefruit, pine, and floral hop flavors, working wonders on your palate.
A mind-numbing 90 International Bittering Units (IBUs).

Sweet huge hoppy flavour. Bitter yet so balanced. Big citrus and pine aroma. Insanely hoppy! Some subdued apricot fruit notes there too. Dark amber in colour, and full bodied. Very interesting, and quite tasty.

Very transparent crystally amber with a very lacey peach colored head. Warm, thick, and spicy hops do their thing in the aroma and create an interestingly creamy pine scent..slightly metallic flavors take away from the piney and fruity notes in the background...nice fermented grapefruit flavors though.

22 oz. bottle (fresh bottle) from Plaza Liquor - Pours a slightly hazy amber color with a two finger thick off white head that slowly settles. Thick lacing. Aroma is toasty caramel malt and light esters. Has a candy sweet caramel malt flavor. Bitterness lingers. Alcohol is noticeable. Medium to full body. Be interesting to try in again after a year of aging. A good beer.

Cloudy rust - copper color with a one finger head ; nice lacing. Whiskyish, vanilla smell with ripe pit fruits and bitter hops. Medium - heavy body with a smooth mouthfeel. Great taste is of ripe pit fruits, sweet malts followed by a cloying alcohol hop bitterness to finish. One of my favorite American style Barleywines

Bottle: Dark brown pour with a medium off white head. Aroma of caramel, brown sugar and some pine. Flavor, smooth and malty up front with some bitterness coming through nicely on the finish. A little earthy on the tail end. Pretty good beer.

Pours a rich creamy maroon with big lasting dark beige head. Smell is smooth caramel and lightly fruity and subtle hops in the background. Taste is fruity, and caramelly with moderate hop flavor peaking in at the end with a nice balancing bitterness. Good creamy body and soft to medium carbonation. Overall, very smooth, and nicely flavorful with a smooth fruity caramel flavor and just enough hops to balance and provide a light lingering bitterness. Really good barley wine.

Bomber. Pours a dark amber color. Sweet and hoppy aroma. Some floral maltiness, like a field of flowers. Bitter and hoppy at first, turning into a mellow, woody sort of roasty malted flavor with just a hint of sweetness. Alcohol is very well hidden.

22 oz. bomber. Pours an almost clear garnet with a two-inch, yellow-white, bubbly head. Very nice aroma of caramel malt, dates, and some whiffs of alcohol. The flavor is all about the hops. There is an initial sweetness of caramel malt, which is very quickly overrun and trampled to death by a massive wave of hops bitterness. Its like taking a grapefruit and biting into it like an apple. There is a long, lingering bitter finish with some heat from the alcohol as well. An interesting interpretation for sure but a bit too rough around the edges for me.
