Old Ruffian is a hefty, hop-forward Barley Wine. Seemingly mellow at first sniff, with its subtle fruit aromas and complex caramel sweetness, this deep mahogany-hued ale quickly shows its true character marked by bold hop flavors and massive hop bitterness. Old Ruffian’s rich, slightly creamy, caramel malt mouthfeel balances its grapefruit, pine, and floral hop flavors, working wonders on your palate.

I scored a bottle that is exactly 6 months old at Friar Tuck’s. Bottled on 12/13/13; I’m drinking it on 6/13/14. Old Ruffian has a great rich scent of caramel, toffee, sweetness, plum, some booze, a hard to place leather/woodsy smell and faint hops at the end. Very complex and pleasant aroma - similar to a scotch ale but more high end. Outstanding. Pours a striking dark amber/ruby color which is darker at the top that it is at the bottom. Thin white ring of foam and heavy lacing. Very nice looking. Taste is some hops up front but not sharp or bitter. That gives way to the caramel and toffee that was previewed in the aroma and goes back to hops in the aftertaste but again, not overdone. Perhaps it is the age of the bottle. The palate is full and smooth for a barleywine, it coats your mouth and adds to the aftertaste. This is up there with many of the great barleywines I have had and it is cheaper than many of them to boot. I was surprised at how good this is.

Bottle shared by Mike at the Barleywine tasting. Deep copper color off white head. Rich caramel and toffee with light pitted fruits and hints of floral earthy hop. Pretty tasty and I’m surprised I haven’t rated this before.

Klassischer Barley Wine mit einigen Früchten, etwas an Hopfen, Malz und einer leichten Nussigkeit. Süffig, einfach zu trinken, echt in Ordnung ohne groß aufzutrumpfen.

Bottle from trade with HenrikO, many thanks! The beer has got a deep dark brown colour with a small head and smooth body. Aroma of barley, malt and dark bread. Taste of barley, woods, hops, fruits, barrel and strong alcohol. Bitter-medicinic finish.

Bottle - 12oz. Dark copper body with a thin, beige foamy/creamy head. Wonderful, robust malty/hoppy aroma with brown sugar, woody, vanilla, and black cherries hints. Alcohol is not agressive. Its strong, rich, complex taste is slightly dominated by hoppy flavors. It carries malty, oaky, fruity, and some cinnamon notes. Ends with a long, warming, bittersweet finish. Awesome winter warmer.

12oz bottle - clear dark mahogany appearance with a med off white head. The aroma is mix of rich caramel and ripe fruit malts along with bitter piney hops. Huge hoppy flavor that kinda overwhelms the malt character. ABV is hidden well. Over hopped in my opinion, but still delicious.

2015 bottle. Pours a deep reddish brown with fluffy tan head that dissipates to leave good lace. Aroma of big toasted malts, caramel and earth. Taste is big caramel malts, booze, and a hint of earthy hop. Solid American barley wine.

Deep brown with ruddy tones. Aroma of dates, raisins and caramel. Flavor of caramel, dried fruit, leading into a sharply bitter, yet full and sweet finish.

Aroma is pine dirty rags and grain. Flavor is Carmel with a grassy hop bite. Basic barley wine. Maybe an old bottle. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
