COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Old Ruffian is a hefty, hop-forward Barley Wine. Seemingly mellow at first sniff, with its subtle fruit aromas and complex caramel sweetness, this deep mahogany-hued ale quickly shows its true character marked by bold hop flavors and massive hop bitterness. Old Ruffian’s rich, slightly creamy, caramel malt mouthfeel balances its grapefruit, pine, and floral hop flavors, working wonders on your palate.
A mind-numbing 90 International Bittering Units (IBUs).

Bottle. The pour was a clear dark mahogany red with a large (2-3 finger) light tan pillowy head that was mostly lasting, receding down to a large puddle and collar with excellent sheeting of lace. The aroma was of a sweet toasted biscuit malt, pine hops and a sweet doughy yeast with notes of toffee, citrus (grapefruit), caramel and some dark fruit (plums and raisons). The taste was sweet and rather malty with hints of toffee and dark fruit at first and then became slightly hoppy with a really nice bitter citrus note and a decent alcohol warming sensation at the end. The flavor hung around for a long while with a bitter sweet citrus flavor left to lie on the taste buds. Mouthfeel was just below medium in body with a dry oily texture and a prickly carbonation. Overall a sensationally tasting Barleywine with just the right blending of sweet malts and bitter hops...

Pours deep red with good tan head. Very clear. Aroma of pine hops and malt with a hint of orange zest. Good carbonation and oily mouth feel. Taste is initially malt but then very quickly hop bitterness takes over with mild alcohol burn. A hint of wood in the profile too

Bottle shared by Mike at the Barleywine tasting. Deep copper color off white head. Rich caramel and toffee with light pitted fruits and hints of floral earthy hop. Pretty tasty and I’m surprised I haven’t rated this before.

Klassischer Barley Wine mit einigen Früchten, etwas an Hopfen, Malz und einer leichten Nussigkeit. Süffig, einfach zu trinken, echt in Ordnung ohne groß aufzutrumpfen.

Bottle from trade with HenrikO, many thanks! The beer has got a deep dark brown colour with a small head and smooth body. Aroma of barley, malt and dark bread. Taste of barley, woods, hops, fruits, barrel and strong alcohol. Bitter-medicinic finish.

Bottle - 12oz. Dark copper body with a thin, beige foamy/creamy head. Wonderful, robust malty/hoppy aroma with brown sugar, woody, vanilla, and black cherries hints. Alcohol is not agressive. Its strong, rich, complex taste is slightly dominated by hoppy flavors. It carries malty, oaky, fruity, and some cinnamon notes. Ends with a long, warming, bittersweet finish. Awesome winter warmer.

12oz bottle - clear dark mahogany appearance with a med off white head. The aroma is mix of rich caramel and ripe fruit malts along with bitter piney hops. Huge hoppy flavor that kinda overwhelms the malt character. ABV is hidden well. Over hopped in my opinion, but still delicious.

2015 bottle. Pours a deep reddish brown with fluffy tan head that dissipates to leave good lace. Aroma of big toasted malts, caramel and earth. Taste is big caramel malts, booze, and a hint of earthy hop. Solid American barley wine.

Deep brown with ruddy tones. Aroma of dates, raisins and caramel. Flavor of caramel, dried fruit, leading into a sharply bitter, yet full and sweet finish.

Bottle from premier. Pours Amber clear with lots of frothy head and lots of lacing. Nose is syrup and earthy bitterness. Flavours of plums, Cheerios, syrup, leather, earthy bitterness. Taste big sweet med/big bitter. Full silky body with lively carbonation and a lasting alcohol burn in the finish.
