Commercial Description:
Looking for something a little different? Brewed with rice and barley malts, Samurai is an easy drinking, unfiltered ale that changes the status quo for unfiltered beers. The addition of rice gives Samurai a slightly fruity, crisp, refreshing and clean taste. This is definitely not your everyday unfiltered beer.

12oz bottle courtesy of Degarth. Pours a very lemonade-esq body with only a small white head. Very fizzy in appearance, resolves to a layer of foam. A bit of cloudiness to the body, but no noticeable sediment. Nose of wheat, citrus fruits, sweet malt, some bitter hops and grass. I believe I can smell some adjunct in there, but maybe that’s because I KNOW it’s in there. Flavor is pretty similar, malts and fruits, adding some grains. Med-long finish, bitter and drying. Slightly watery palate, light bodied and crisp. Refreshing. Interesting, but not something I would reach for very often.

Bottle. Looks like urine, has soapy head. Aroma is slightly wheaty. Somewhat creamy, carbonated palate. Not a lot of taste. Little, if no, aftertaste. Disappointed that I have 5 left to drink, but I’ll survive.

Sl. hazy yellow pour. Aroma is really of nothing. Tastes like an average wheat beer even though I know it is made with rice.

Pours a urine colored gold with small fizzy head. Armoa similar to an average macrobrew. Very similar to many american macrobrews because of the use of rice. Nothing special. i was very disappointed considering how much I enjoy the other Great Divide Brews.

12 oz. bottle courtesy of ’Naka. Pours hazy yellow-gold with foamy white head, about a finger thick. Nose of malt with hint of lemon and spice, but not sure where that’s coming from. Taste is odd. Not much there at the beginning. Carbed as all can be. Taste is very bland at first, like a BMC-esque beer, but then lends the tongue a touch of spice, before a muddled, skunky finish/after. Not a bad beer. It’s interesting. I’m not sure I’d seek it out, but I wouldn’t turn one down.

Bottle (12oz). Pale gold, flat-looking, small fizzy diminishing head. Vaguely sweet-smelling, oddly vegetal - like slightly rotten apricots. The taste is ... nothing, really - genericly fruity, a little stale bitterness, maybe a hint of olive? - actually not bad, might be a good summer beer, if really, really cold. Very light, slick, still body, quick finish, no aftertaste. Overall - ehh.

12oz bottle, I can’t believe GD is proud and advertising their rice beer. A GD brewer told me this was made by the request of local restrauant owners to serve their costumers something local and accessible. surprised they finally bottled this and talk about how nicely the rice contributes to the beer.....pours hazy yellow with soapy white head. looks very wit like. nose is very stale, rice, wow you can really smell the rice. flavor is sweaty, sorta citrusy, stale grains. wow, really adjuncty. water body. there is almost no hop flavor here. very clean and refreshing. maybe worth something as a summertime drink on a hot day, but water works well for that too. an odd brew for sure but it actually has a pleasant taste.

Wow, I’m surprised to see this beer getting fairly blasted. For what it is it seems like a pretty good beer. Pours very dull pale yellow with a large fluffy white head. The aroma is very crisp with some spice, lemon, pepper and pale malt. The body is crisp and biting with assertive prickly carbonation. The flavor starts with 7-Up like effervescence, peppery spice, hints of fruit and pale malt. The finish has lots of spicy phenols. I’m not sure why this beer is showing up around here for the first time in late November as this seems like a good summertime beer to me. Recommended for a light lawnmower type of beer.
