Commercial Description:
Looking for something a little different? Brewed with rice and barley malts, Samurai is an easy drinking, unfiltered ale that changes the status quo for unfiltered beers. The addition of rice gives Samurai a slightly fruity, crisp, refreshing and clean taste. This is definitely not your everyday unfiltered beer.

This beer brings to mind one of my favorite quotes from Kurosawa’s epic movie Yojimbo:

"I’m not dying yet. I’ve got many men to kill first." -Sanjuro the Samurai

Seriously though, this is a great summer beer. Comparing it to hopped-up, unfiltered "budweiser-style" beer would be unfair, but it fits well enough. I don’t mean it in a bad way, it’s actually quite good. Cloudy and flavorful enough to appease the average beer geek, but smooth enough to be enjoyed by the average Bud drinker. A great way to bridge the gap between Joe Sixpack and Mike Microbew. Hopefully they’ll make this a year-round brew.

Bottle: Pours a pale gold with little head.Smells of macro swill somewhat grassy.Taste is the best part of this beer by no means outstanding but suprising crisp and clean.Palate is medium bodied. All and all a solid beer considering the style.

Seems a teeny bit underrated. Nose is almost non-existent, color is golden but standard, flavor is hugely reminiscent of sake bombs. Um... color me nostalgic.

Golden pour with a light feel. I enjoyed this one very much. It had hints of fruit in it but maintained a solid body. This one went down easy.

Draft at the brewery. Pours a hazy amber with a small white head. Aroma is yeasty and sweet with some hoppiness. Flavor is rich and malty, with some wheat and citrus notes. Finishes crisp and clean. Very quaffable but it’s not short on flavor. Great session beer.

On tap in GD tap room. Pours a hazy yellow with a small white head and a bit of lacings. Moderate sweetness with a light bitterness. Malty with a bit of breadyness. Also a hint of bog myrtle. Medium bodied. Lively carbonation. Dry finish.

Appearance: Pours a clear, yellow body with a thin, wispy white head. Smell: Very lightly malty, sweetish aroma with notes of flowers, sake, and white bread. Taste: Well, it’s just what the aroma would have you expect of the taste. Light, sake-like fruity flavor with a drop of honey sweetness. Floral and bready hints. No more than a light bitterness. Finishes crisp and clean. Mouthfeel: Light-bodied. Medium carbonation. Drinkability: It definitely would make for fine, summertime drinking and wasn’t too bad on a grimey day in mid-December, either.

I don’t normally like adjunct-laden beers, but GD did a nice job with this one if you’re looking for a decent blonde ale. The pour was hazy yellow/golden. Aroma was earthy, grain-like, bready. The flavor was earthy, barley, sharp spicey or minty like hops, with a finish that was bitter (hopped), taking on an almost rye or wheat like character. The rice was a non-factor for me in terms of flavor, and the crisp, dry, lightly spiced mouthfeel worked for me. In the end, it’s only a blonde ale, but it was done nicely, imo.
