3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 FlacoAlto (3153) - Tucson, USA - AUG 5, 2004
UPDATED: JUN 17, 2005 Rerate June 2005
This beer is slightly hazy and shows a mix between copper, ruby and orange colors when held up to the light. It at first generates a three finger thick head when I pour it, it settles down to a frothy tan colored head that sticks around for a fair amount of time. The aroma is at first quite fruity with citrus notes of grapefruit and lemon zest. There are some aromatic notes of pine as well.
The taste is lightly sweet up front and this interacts with some of the hoppy notes to create a citrus character reminiscent of tangerines and oranges. The hops begin to grab a hold, and the beer has a really sharp bitter bite to it, which gives way to a lingering chalky astringent hoppiness. This is certainly a well hopped beer, it has a hint of maltiness to it, but just enough to be barely perceptible. It really is not enough to even tame the hops one bit. Because of the massive hop character this beer is almost dry on the palate. This is certainly and over the top hopped IPA, almost too much even for me and I like hops. At times I can see this really appealing to me. Overall score doesn’t change individuals of 7/4/6/4/13

Pungeant aromas of pine sap, orange, and tangerine waft from my glass, as I sniff deeper the pine-tar aromas start to dominate. This beer pours with a thick, rocky tan head that sits on top of a lightly hazy copper-amber colored beer. The taste is lightly sweet up front. The malty sweetness continues from start to finish of this beer. The finish is bitter with a slight hop derived astringency. A solid level of malt is here as well with notes of toasted biscuits, and caramel malt. The beer is suprisingly light on the palate and goes down quite smoothly. The hop flavor is definitely here as well, though it is in no way totally over the top. I get notes of pine sap, citrus fruits, and a grassy herbal character all mixed together. The more I drink this the more malty it gets as well. This was certainly brewed with lots of crystal malts to compete with the hop character, so much so that I think that it might detract a bit from this beer.

Had a nice citrus aroma pretty lively palate but did not enjoy the taste too much for this IPA. I do not think I will purchase this one again though.

Smell is quite interesting considering this is an IPA. Smells quite malty sweet with a very faint pine hops aroma. Poured a clear copper color with a decent white head. Taste is immediately malty sweet but then followed up quickly with some nice citrus and pine hops flavor. Feels medium bodied with a slick texture.

Wow, great balanced IPA. Dark orange color with little head. The aroma is wonderful...very sharply piney with just a nice mix of hops and a hint of the malts. The balance continues in the taste. Great flavorful citrus and pine resin that leads to a crisp and mellow maltiness in the back of the mouth. There is a touch of bitterness and even alcohol, but it all works. Good carbonation and mouthfeel. Just a very solid and tasty IPA all around.
3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Ron (1696) - Rochester, New York, USA - MAY 24, 2012
Bottle. Honey gold with a great head that leaves some sticky lacing down the glass. Aroma is pine needles and grapefruit. Taste is thick, semi-sweet and very dry with the bitter hops. Moderate bodied.
4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 rangerred (340) - Johnson City, Tennessee, USA - MAY 21, 2012
12oz bottle into a pint glass.
Pours a slightly hazy medium copper with a 1.5 finger off-white head. Awesome lacing and head retention.
Aroma of pine and earth along with a fairly strong nuttiness that I was not expecting. Also a little bit of fruit thrown in there.
The flavor is an almost perfect balance between malt and hops. Plenty of piny hop flavor up front that is quickly followed by some nuttiness along with toasted malt. A little sweet grain followed by a moderate bitterness lasting through the finish. Mouthfeel is quite thick and full.
This is really an excellent brew! A wonderful balance of flavors and a nice mouthfeel make this extremely drinkable. Will definitely have to pick up again.

Almost clear copper orange with a bright white head and wonderful lacing. Strong pine aromas with ample grapefruit as well as floral notes. Strong crisp hops bitterness hits hard up front and maintains its strength throughout. Rich yet subtle bready malts ease in but don’t can’t displace the hops. Medium body, lively carbonation, smooth creamy mouthfeel, and a wonderfully balanced lingering finish.

Bottle. Hazy golden orange pour with a creamy off-white head that lasts a while. Aroma is sweet and hoppy with notes of grapefruit, passionfruit, apricot, orange, biscuit and caramel. Flavour is very much like the aroma, if anything it is even more fruity but still balanced nicely by the sweet malt. Mouthfeel is slick with moderate carbonation and a lingering bitter finish that is tempered by some substantial sweetness. Very nice brew that smells and tastes a little like a IIPA, and is almost as rich, but without the kick from the alcohol.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 KajII (465) - Macon, North Carolina, USA - MAY 14, 2012
Bottle. The pour was a cloudy medium burnt orange with an average sized (1-2 finger) white rocky head that had good retention, reducing to a medium cap and having some good streaky lacing.
The aroma was of a caramel malt, pine and floral hops and a mild moldy yeast with notes of caramel and citrus (orange peel).
The taste was a nice bitter hoppy with a touch of citrus throughout, and had a light malty sweetness and a hint of caramel towards the end. The flavor lasted an average amount of time after the swallow with a hoppy slightly sweet malty taste settling nicely on the taste buds.
Mouthfeel was a bit beyond light in body and dry in texture with a lively carbonation.
Overall a nice refreshing twist on an IPA, the slight malty sweet finish was surprisingly enjoyable...
