COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Originally called "liquid bread," the Dopplebock style guided monks through periods of penitent fasting. Wolfgang has heavenly notes of caramel, dark fruit, and toffee balanced by a subtle hop character. While its revered history evokes and appreciation of austerity and sacrifice, this Dopplebock is a rich luxury - no repentance required.

Pours a deep crimson color with a slick white-tan head. Smells like strawberry shortcake. Aroma is alcohol, fruity, bread, vanilla, sweet, toffee coconut (?). Really interesting. Taste is drier than expected, a little chalky, fruity, alcohol, solvent, a little bitter, wine-like. Thin lacing; nice smooth, creamy mouth feel. I would have liked this to taste more like it smelt (strawberry shortcake). But overall I was pleasantly surprised.

Bottle. Pours deep brown with tan head. Aroma has notes of caramel, toasted malt, some spiciness. Flavor is much the same with hints of brown sugar and sweet. Medium-heavy mouthfeel, medium carbonation.. Overall, not bad! I had this to celabrate the Cowboys crushing the eagles!

Pours a deep dark reddish brown color with a smallish off white head that dissipates quickly to a smattering of bubbles on top. The aroma is sweet with burnt sugars and light sweet dark fruits along with a bit of toffee that seems a bit out of place. Faint floral hop aroma provides little balance to the malty sweetness. The flavor is sweet with lots of caramel and brown sugar flavors and a bit of burnt sugar sweetness. Light prune flavor along with a weak coffee type melanoid thing going on. Medium body with a light level of carbonation and a sweet crisp mouthfeel. I find that so many American breweries try to replicate the dopplebock style and canít seem to pull it off. This is a fine beer, but compared to some of the hallmarks of the style it just doesnít compare. The smooth melanoid and rich dark dried fruits are lacking in this example.

The beer pours a dark brown color with an off-white head. The aroma has some roasted malt with a hint of chocolate mixed in. The flavor is very similar. There is some roasted malt and a very light hint of smoke. I also get some chocolate and some dark fruit. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Bottle marked July 3, 2012. Pours with a clear bronze hued body with red highlights and a medium tan head that lasts. Aromas are nutty, soil, chocolate, anise, marzipan, leather, vanilla. A decent amount of ester like notes for a lager. Flavors are nutty, vegital, marzipan, caramel, DMS, ansie and toffee. Medium bitter, clean. Lacking traditional melanoidins. Raisiny, medium carbonation, slightly warming.

Bottled on JUN 25 2012. Nose explodes with roast and chocolate and earth, some fruit and hops, huge caramel and toffee. Darker-than-blood red body with a rocky tan head. Taste is sweet and bitter, lovely earthen/roast and related notes listed above, beautiful and restrained bitterness, a little mocha creeping out with brown sugar. Surprisingly light body, alcohol pretty well concealed but Iím surprised at how watery. Sticky on the lips. Taste-wise itís quite bold; this is what Celebrator used to be.

Poured a medium garnet color with a thin head. Nose of malt and in the mouth it is a medium to full bodied palate. Ok for the style but not great.

UPDATED: DEC 25, 2013 Pours brown copper brown with off beige head and fair lacing. The aroma is rich liquid bread, musty raisins, burntish caramel. The taste is light bittering chocolate and biscuit grains with some dates, raisins, light burnt bready sweetness. Nice earthy finish with some herbal German hops that are a bit stronger than European styles making it decidedly American, with a malt that seems to blur between German and Belgian inspired grain arrangements. Solid attempt and much appreciated craft brew of a classic.
