COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Originally called "liquid bread," the Dopplebock style guided monks through periods of penitent fasting. Wolfgang has heavenly notes of caramel, dark fruit, and toffee balanced by a subtle hop character. While its revered history evokes and appreciation of austerity and sacrifice, this Dopplebock is a rich luxury - no repentance required.

UPDATED: DEC 25, 2013 Pours brown copper brown with off beige head and fair lacing. The aroma is rich liquid bread, musty raisins, burntish caramel. The taste is light bittering chocolate and biscuit grains with some dates, raisins, light burnt bready sweetness. Nice earthy finish with some herbal German hops that are a bit stronger than European styles making it decidedly American, with a malt that seems to blur between German and Belgian inspired grain arrangements. Solid attempt and much appreciated craft brew of a classic.

Bomber from Supermarket Liquors - Fort Collins. Nose is toffee, raisins, and a hint of bubblegum. Slightly hazy rusty brown with a medium beige head. Flavor is lightly sweet, toffee, dark fruitiness, and a hint of bitterness and charred bread.

Some caramel and toffee, along with a little breadiness in the aroma. The body isn’t especially rich and the flavor takes a long while to come out--cold temperatures are deadly to this one. Moderate carbonation. Not especially sweet. Sort of a lackluster doppelbock. I think if I hadn’t know that it was a doppelbock I wouldn’t have identified it as such. Meh. (on tap at the Butcher and the Boar, Minneapolis)

Bomber. This pours clear cola colored red brown. A three finger head has good retention. Nice lacing. In the aroma I get wheat, toffee, and yeast. This tastes of bready yeast at the first sip. Some light fruit and nice wheat flavors. A bit of hop notes add fruit and some bitterness. Malt is toffee and some brown sugar. Alcohol is not tasted and despite the 8% ABV, this is fairly light drinking.

Bomber: Pours deep brown with a gigantic, thick, tan head. Scent is toffee, dark fruit. Taste is bready, toasted, dark fruits... Quite a bit of hop bitterness. Fairly dry. Not as sweet as some, but pretty good stuff.
