Originally called "liquid bread," the Dopplebock style guided monks through periods of penitent fasting. Wolfgang has heavenly notes of caramel, dark fruit, and toffee balanced by a subtle hop character. While its revered history evokes and appreciation of austerity and sacrifice, this Dopplebock is a rich luxury - no repentance required.

Bottle. Moderate to heavy roasted and dark bread, moderate cooked orange for the hops, light to moderate meat for the yeast, with date and brown sugar in the background. Head is small, frothy, off-white with spotty lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is hazy yet sparkling mohogany. Flavor starts lightly to moderately sweet and light acidic, then finishes lightly sweet. Palate is on the fuller side of medium, watery with a lively carbonation. Distinct and bold Doppelbock aromas, and a nice slippery palate.

honestly, the whole dopplebock thing is too sweet for me. this is well done, but the rock candy/brown sugar effect is too much for me. love Great Divide, not the style.

Brown sugar, fresh baked bread and a tiny bit of dark fruit in the nose. (7.5/10) Color is clear, dark brown, orange highlights, tan head, spotty patterned lacing. (3.5/5) Palate is rich, full, satisfying, lots of dried plums, some graham crackers, some stickiness in the back end, nice balance and feel. Excellent American stab at the style.

Tap at Great Divide - clear light amber - nose is melanoidin, caramelized sugars, a light metallic/copper note - fairly creamy in the mouth - flavor is sweet burnt sugars, moderate esters, moderate malt richness - however, an undercurrent of DMS rides throughout - the finish washes it out with bitterness, spice and alcohol - lagers don’t seem to be their thing.

Beer has a very malty aroma with notes of roasty caramel, dryer fruits and raisin. Beer is brilliantly clear with a deep mahogany color. Beer has a thin white head with nice carbonation. Beer has a medium sweetness that balances a very subdued hop bitterness. Flavor carries stone fruit flavors through. Palate is medium with a slight stickiness. Overall beer is very nice and I’d have it again. It’s always nice to find a good dopplebock
