Originally called "liquid bread," the Dopplebock style guided monks through periods of penitent fasting. Wolfgang has heavenly notes of caramel, dark fruit, and toffee balanced by a subtle hop character. While its revered history evokes and appreciation of austerity and sacrifice, this Dopplebock is a rich luxury - no repentance required.

otakuden (1783) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - NOV 25, 2013
Appearance: Liquid plum and raisins with garnet glints along the sides. A khaki head fades with a few arcs of lace before setting into a full thick blanket. Swirls thick and with more lace.
Nose: Melba and pumpernickel toast with brittle chocolates and dark fruit stones on top. Chewy meaty sweet plums and raisins in the middle. Light treacle and toffee along the sides. Chocolate graham crackers and cinnamon sprinkles.
Palate: Whole loaves of pumpernickel and wheat breads soaked with plums, raisins, and prunes. Tart tannic leather finish of stones and red wine soaked leather with a nip of cayenne in the back. Sweet toffee and treacle coat the sides along with weaving in and out of the other flavors. Grapes and figs up front.
Final Thoughts: Another delicious beer from Great Divide Brewing. As far as doppelbocks go, Wolfgang is a winner and would make any German proud. A seasonal offering, be sure to grab a couple bottles when you see it on the shelf.

Bottle from Systembolaget. Clear mahogany with a medium head. A lot of malt both in the aroma and taste. Also toffee, dried fruit, brown sugar and notes of syrup. Almost a full body on this one, the finish was a bit sticky.

Was expecting more of this brew from Great Divide. They usually make excellent beer. At least its unusual. Fudge and malty taste and aroma. Will not buy it again.

Best before Jan 2014 (Swedish tag)
Dark brown color with compact beige head. The aroma and the flavor have too much cereals accent; there is some dark caramel and light flavor of roasted malts; some residual sweetness, but minimal; the alcohol feeling is well controlled; just a bit too much roastiness in the end.
A good beer, but unexciting.

From a 1 pint, 6 FL.OZ bottle. Color is a brown amber with medium light brown head that disparates quickly. I smell sweetness, caramel, yeast, alcohol and flowers. Taste all the same with a brown sugar and resins. Very flavorful and complex.

Pours dark brown with two fingers of tan head that drops fast. Aroma of caramel, toffee, hazel nuts, earth. Taste is initial toffee sweet followed by a slightly medicinal bitterness. Finish is sweetish with light bitter. Body is medium to full and creamy with soft to average carbonation. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
