Originally called "liquid bread," the Dopplebock style guided monks through periods of penitent fasting. Wolfgang has heavenly notes of caramel, dark fruit, and toffee balanced by a subtle hop character. While its revered history evokes and appreciation of austerity and sacrifice, this Dopplebock is a rich luxury - no repentance required.

Finally done traveling I began the process of clearing the on deck part of the fridge. This was right near the front and seemed like a good place to start. A solid release from Great Divide was also a fair deal at Sahara Mart. I would be hesitant to buy one now though; the hop edge is bound to have faded to just a memory.

Aroma / Appearance - A reddish brown base is the color of chocolate dipped red vines. Sand colored head falls like dust into a thin layer. Caramel, maple, and wet fall leaves warm the air with the texture of a late summer afternoon just after sunset.

Flavor / Palate - Maple, caramel, and chocolate are initially heavy. Soon though they begin to mellow out and open up into a creamy mouthfeel. Like a liquid candy bar it fills the mouth with flavor before a lazy bitterness wraps up the blend of hops and malts. While not the greatest doppelbock it is still a worthwhile purchase if you are a fan of the style.

UPDATED: MAR 22, 2014 On tap at Barley’s in OP, KS. Very similar to Spaten’s Optimator. I don’t enough about dopplebocks to gauge where this rates among them, but this is excellent--nice roasted caramel malt that is sweet, but not treacly. However, for a dopplebock, it is a bit harsh. I taste bit of Great Divide’s Yeti in here.

It poured a dark brown color with a small tan head. The aroma was moderately sweet, caramel, bittersweet chocolate, raisin and some roast. The taste was sweet, with chocolate, some caramel, raisins and some booziness. Nice.
