4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
22oz bottle, no date, not in my cellar for very long! The hop character surprises me; meaning its subdued nature is surprising...compared to the draft barrle aged version I had about a year ago...I remember being able to smell fresh hops in it...not so in this one...a malt monster, pours thick like oil...just like a really good imperial stout should...I think I base the appearance of these on how they flow from the bottle as much as anything else...but this one cascaded into a billowing deep brown head...its fade left lotsa lace on my Moneuse tulip...it was thick too, and darker at the top of the lace than the bottom...almost like something had been microwaved in my glass...I think I’ll really have to scrub this one when I’m done! Sweet & thick, but not overdone. slight roastiness of coffee, dark chocolate, maybe a dash of pipe tobacco and an underlying almost bourbon character to it...much more complex than the draft barrle-aged appeared to me (although I was quite intoxicate when I tried it and basically gulped down a pint of it in about 10 minutes)...I like this ones mellow hop character a lot, and I love the body. Quality beer.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Thick and black with a dark brown foam...nice...a coffee and chocolate dominated nose with hints of the awaiting hops...taste is very hoppy, but with a comfortable underlying sweetness...could use more body to balance it out...ends is a rather bitter aftertaste from the hops, which almost burns your tongue...still less than the oak aged version...

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Black body with a dark brown head. Taste is dominated by chocolate and coffee with a strong hop presence. Surprisingly balanced however, and rather easy to drink for the style. This beer was quite enjoyable throughout.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: OCT 27, 2006 The commercial description says it is "almost viscous." Bullcrap. it is viscous. It made glopping sounds going into my glass. Extremely dark with a head that laces like a brown backout curtain. Heavy hop aroma with roasted bakers choclate in the background.
Tastes better than I thought it would. The roastiness comes through what is undoubtedly a great deal of hops. Still on the verge of being too hoppy to my palate, but the beer works well and is far superior to many of the wave of big imperial stouts I’ve had.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Thanks to btg for the bottle. Pours an opaque black with a small brown head. Deep muted roast malt and slight cocoa aromas underneath a hoppy fruit sweetness. Almost sickly sweet in the nose, fortunately compensated quickly by a roast character. Caramel and chocolate frame a citrus hop note with lingers in the finish with a building alcohol warmth. Mouthfeel is full and lusterous, but perhaps a bit too sticky.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 1/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: DEC 26, 2005 Bomber purchased at the Foodery in Philly. Jet black pour with a dark brown head. Strong roasty smell to it, with the hops noticeable in the finish. Round, full roasty flavor without much coffee bitterness, though the coffee flavor is there. The hops balance it very nicely, bringing in the bitterness the roast usually would. Great dry finish. Not as interesting as it’s buddy from the oak, though.
