Dark, and with a tight beige head - beautiful. Super chocolatey aroma, mellow rich roast. Ditto the taste. Very full and succulent palate. Chocolatey roast is delicious, the roast has no harsh aspects at all. Perfect strong mind.

Bottled. Hazy deep brown colour, close to black, with a mediumsized beige head, that leaves some slight lace. Aroma is coffee, mild roasted notes as well as dark dry fruits an some toffee. Flavour is coffee, roasted malts, some chocolaty and cocoa notes with some mild bitter finish. Pleasant roasted finish with some chocolate as well as some mild toffeeish notes.

On tap at GBBF ’11. Brown, with hardly any head. Smooth tasty and full - Porter-like. Very pleasant, soft, creamy choc, with a nice smell too.

Half pint pulled at the brewery’s pub - The Wasdale Head Inn - at Wasdale Head (Lake District). Dark with red tints and a yellowish foamy head. Strong roasetd coffee aroma. An enjoyable coffee flavour and very smooth. Yum.

Cask, Wasdale Head Inn, Lake District. Very dark brown with a good sized muddy cream head. Lots of roasty toasty character in the aroma and flavour, with some dark fruit and chocolate lurking too. This slid down very nicely in front of the fireplace in one of the most dramatic locations for a boozer you’re likely to find.

Bottle, Houghton Hall, Carlisle. A rich chocolate and malt aroma greets you immediately, with some coffee also lurking around. Smoky, roasted malt on the tongue and in the finish. Some hop resin for balance, but overwhelmingly a very fine, deep ruby-black strong mild, with a nice alcoholic kick, reminiscent of blackcurrant cough mixture. Good stuff.

Very dark, with a small amount of off-white foam. Burnt popcorn aromatics with a slight underlying chocolate. Much the same in the mouth. Light but rich and deep in flavour. Very drinkable if a little strong for a mild. I actually thing that is pretty delicious. Very nutty. mmm

Cask@Derby Winter Beer Festival, 2010. Black beer with a light head. The aroma is roasted, and the flavour is bitter and roasted. Overall a reasonable bitter stout like beer.
