Bottle from Trembling Madness, York. This inky black beer has ruby red highlights and floral pine and grapefruit flavours, roasted and chocolate notes with a zesty citrus finish.

Cask at Craven Arms, Birmingham. Unbelievably drinkable BIPA. Charcoal, chippings of roadside workings, delicious hoppy smoothness. And let’s mention the smoothness again: this beer is very smooth, plus the flavour lasts and lasts. Fantastic.

Cask conditioned handpump Wenlock Arms London 06/09/13. A black beer with an off-white bubbly head. Slightly roasty in the nose but it’s mostly hops. Big grapefruity stuff with hints of coffee in the mouth. Lovely flavours. Very nice indeed. Quality.

Bottle in the Head of Steam, Newcastle. Pours black with a cream head. Some good bitter hop piney flavour over some nice chocolate malt notes. Surprisingly refreshing. Tasty stuff. A fine black IPA.

August 29, 2013 - hand-pull cask at The Harp (Chandos Place). Black, light and oily-looking, small but long-lasting tan rocky head. Aroma and taste are very nice indeed - a little thick and slighy syrupy but NOT sweet - am actual hint of iodine along with the coffee/nutshell roast - and redolent with low-level lush dried grassy / floral / gently herbal bitterness, light alcohol. Taste follows, but a little more roast-assertive; rely soft and balanced. Slick mouthfeel, decent body, airy but not all that carbonated, medium finish were all elements fade at the same time. An Elegant beer.

33cl bottle from Appellation Wines. Appearance - opaque black with a lovely lacy head. Nose - chocolate orange, grapes and grapefruit. Taste - coffee, dark chocolate and a tropical citrus thing. Not pineapple - more like lychees. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture and a long dry but yet elegant finish. No rough edges, really balanced. Overall - great black IPA. One of the best I’ve had, no question.

Bottle from Bier Huis, Ossett. Very dark red. Thin, tight, tan head. Milk chocolate. Some coffee. Light gianduja nuttiness. Taste is chocolate sweet, then cocoa dry. Some unripe, red fruit bitterness balances things out. Creamy palate. Dry, long, bitter finish. Good tackle.
