Name Origin: On the West Coast, surfers have a term for that perfect time of day, when the waves are breaking just right and it feels like you can ride forever. They call it Alchemy Hour. In Cleveland, our surfers have to work a little harder to find a perfect swell. Dressed in wetsuits, up at dawn, they camp out on the shores of Lake Erie in near-freezing temperatures, waiting for the ultimate wave. Crazy? Yes. Extreme? Definitely. Alchemy Hour Double IPA pays tribute to the North Coast’s unlikely surf bums and the ancient quest for liquid gold, wherever it may live: on the ocean, in a lake, in a bottle.

Style Origin: Distinctively American, the Double IPA or Imperial IPA is thought to have originated in California. This fairly new style is a heartier, hoppier version of the traditional IPA with a higher alcohol content, creating a very strong and flavorful drinking experience.

Flavor: Hop-forward with a balanced blend of Mosaic and Nugget hops

MALT Harrington 2-Row Base Malt: Allows color and flavor from other specialty malts to come through; makes for very clean beer Caramel 45: Contributes to amber color; provides complexity Honey Malt: Contributes sweetness

HOPS Mosaic: New U.S. hop; provides floral, tropical, fruity, and earthy characteristics Nugget: U.S. bittering hop; provides floral, resiny aroma and flavor Cascade: U.S. hop with citrus characteristics for aroma

Pairs With: Smoked beef brisket, grilled lamb, sharp and rich cheeses, and sweet desserts

Shelf Life: 90 days

A dark copper with some ruby, half finger white head. Smells of sweet fruit, lavender, resin, citrus, caramel malt in the distance and a little woodiness. Taste is surprisingly sweet, pineapple juice, apple cider, grapefruit which greatly offsets the citrusy, resiny hop flavors. Ends with a grapefruit like bitterness and a cracker malt. Alcohol is fairly present but not distracting. Sweeter than I'd like in an IPA, perhaps need to try a fresher bottle as the hops aren't quite there enough. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap at Warren’s Ale House in Wheaton, showing a clear, deep bronze color, with plenty of off white head froth, and curtainy cling to the lacing. The nose was earthy, grass & greenery, with a touch of sweetness, and some backup citrus. Medium+ bodied, with decent carbonation, malt sweetness and alcohol presence gave the taste a bit of barleywine impression, included some citrus, a moderate, citrusy & earthy bitterness that lingered, and some alcohol warmth. A hefty & flavorful DIPA.

Very drinkable IPA, lemony not terribly bitter, with a fair amount(not over the top) of residue malt sweetness. Pours with a white thick head that quickly dissipates. Colour is fairly dark for an IPA, copper to bronze, translucent.

Bottle shared by Ken at Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours bright amber with a white head. Aroma is earthy, floral, resin. Full bodied or very near. Flavor is sweet caramel, lots of earthy and floral hop. I call hopped barley wine. It’s very, very nice.

A dark amber DIPA with a thin off white head. In aroma, sweet fruity caramel malt with light floral hops, light catnip, smooth butterscotch, very nice. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity caramel malt with loads of catty floral hops, grapefruit pulp, nice treacle, alcohol warmth, nice and smooth. On tap at Jet Rock Terminal B PHL.

Aroma - Tangerine, citrusy, piney, and a little boozy Appearance - very clear copper with a nice white head Taste - initial light bitterness with a smooth sweet and bitter finish Mouthfeel - light/medium bodied, very smooth, and slightly sticky Overall - really good beer. Hops balance the malt backbone of this beer nicely. Great tangerine aromas really compliment the beer

12 oz bottle pours a clear orange with small off-white head that leaves lots of lacing. Smells something like marijuana, but the aroma has lots of grapefruit and floral hops, Taste is delicate and almost sweet - unusual for an IIPA, with lots of caramel malts in the middle before a drier, hoppy finish. Body is medium with a sticky mouthfeel and perfect carbonation. I had braced myself for another puckering and dank hop bomb, but this one pleasantly surprised me. Very well balanced, and as subltle as a 9.4% IIPA can get. Another winner from Great Lakes.
