Name Origin: On the West Coast, surfers have a term for that perfect time of day, when the waves are breaking just right and it feels like you can ride forever. They call it Alchemy Hour. In Cleveland, our surfers have to work a little harder to find a perfect swell. Dressed in wetsuits, up at dawn, they camp out on the shores of Lake Erie in near-freezing temperatures, waiting for the ultimate wave. Crazy? Yes. Extreme? Definitely. Alchemy Hour Double IPA pays tribute to the North Coastís unlikely surf bums and the ancient quest for liquid gold, wherever it may live: on the ocean, in a lake, in a bottle.

Style Origin: Distinctively American, the Double IPA or Imperial IPA is thought to have originated in California. This fairly new style is a heartier, hoppier version of the traditional IPA with a higher alcohol content, creating a very strong and flavorful drinking experience.

Flavor: Hop-forward with a balanced blend of Mosaic and Nugget hops

MALT Harrington 2-Row Base Malt: Allows color and flavor from other specialty malts to come through; makes for very clean beer Caramel 45: Contributes to amber color; provides complexity Honey Malt: Contributes sweetness

HOPS Mosaic: New U.S. hop; provides floral, tropical, fruity, and earthy characteristics Nugget: U.S. bittering hop; provides floral, resiny aroma and flavor Cascade: U.S. hop with citrus characteristics for aroma

Pairs With: Smoked beef brisket, grilled lamb, sharp and rich cheeses, and sweet desserts

Shelf Life: 90 days

12 oz. bottle from The Hop Yard, Raleigh (enjoy by July 3, 2016 so I just missed it by a few days). Dark orange pour with a frothy khaki head. Aroma of tangerine, grapefruit, wet grass, and toffee. The taste certainly features a bitter hop presence but there is a sturdy malt backbone that makes this almost akin to a barley wine. Tangerine, grapefruit rind, pine, caramel, and graham cracker are the noted flavors here. Nice beer!

Very well might be my favorite IPA Nice brown head...not too much carbonation, nice lacing. ABV is high but it doesnít overpower the delicious flavor of this brew. I will def drink this one again.

Bottle 35,5 cl. Pours a clear, deep golden with a white head. Piney, turpentine aroma. Rich, sweet, malty body with nice, tropical hops. Bitter finish but not to any extreme degree. Smooth and easygoing. 240516

Appearance: clear pale amber with one finger of creamy ivory head, good retention and moderate lacing. (4/5) Aroma: pithy citrus, moderately resiny and dank pine, pale malt, floral, slightly earthy. (9/10) Taste: moderate sweet, moderate-high bitter. (9/10) Medium-full slightly slick body, moderate-high carbonation, lingering moderately bitter lightly warming finish. (4/5) Oh yeah, thatís what Iím talkiní íbout. Nice example of one of my favourite styles. Fresh enough that the hops havenít lost ground to the pale (and maybe a hint of caramel) malt, big bitter but clean in the finish. The higher ABV is nearly completely integrated, manifesting only as a slight warming in the finish. Big without being overwhelming, confident without being brash. I could drink a whole lot of these. (17/20)
