Name Origin: On the West Coast, surfers have a term for that perfect time of day, when the waves are breaking just right and it feels like you can ride forever. They call it Alchemy Hour. In Cleveland, our surfers have to work a little harder to find a perfect swell. Dressed in wetsuits, up at dawn, they camp out on the shores of Lake Erie in near-freezing temperatures, waiting for the ultimate wave. Crazy? Yes. Extreme? Definitely. Alchemy Hour Double IPA pays tribute to the North Coast’s unlikely surf bums and the ancient quest for liquid gold, wherever it may live: on the ocean, in a lake, in a bottle.

Style Origin: Distinctively American, the Double IPA or Imperial IPA is thought to have originated in California. This fairly new style is a heartier, hoppier version of the traditional IPA with a higher alcohol content, creating a very strong and flavorful drinking experience.

Flavor: Hop-forward with a balanced blend of Mosaic and Nugget hops

MALT Harrington 2-Row Base Malt: Allows color and flavor from other specialty malts to come through; makes for very clean beer Caramel 45: Contributes to amber color; provides complexity Honey Malt: Contributes sweetness

HOPS Mosaic: New U.S. hop; provides floral, tropical, fruity, and earthy characteristics Nugget: U.S. bittering hop; provides floral, resiny aroma and flavor Cascade: U.S. hop with citrus characteristics for aroma

Pairs With: Smoked beef brisket, grilled lamb, sharp and rich cheeses, and sweet desserts

Shelf Life: 90 days

Best Great Lakes beer I've had! A lot of citrus up front and a super hoppy finish. Defiantly a must try!

Reddish/amber color with malty aroma. Creamy head that doesn’t last long, but nice Belgium lace. Honey/carmel sweet malt taste that lays on the palate with a bitter grapefruit taste at the end.

Darkish amber color. Aroma is malt, honey, alcohol. Taste is very close to the aroma, with the addition of some nice hops bitterness. A tiny bit too sweet for my tastes in a DIPA, but still an excellent example of the style. Reminds me a bit of Hopslam, but not quite in Hopslam’s league.

Pours reddish bronze with off-white head and some lacing. Aroma of earthy hops, tropical fruit, and honey. Taste is the same with strong bitterness. Too much honey in my humble opinion...otherwise a solid brew.

UPDATED: MAY 10, 2014 Array of hops in this beast of a 2XIPA. Pine, grapefruit, floral. Tantalizing nose that comes through with the flavor. Slick mouth feel. Yum! *I bought an entire case and the more I drink it, the more I love it. This has become my favorite beer. It doesn’t get better than this, so a perfect score of 5 it gets from me.

Bottle. Clear copper color with a light tan head. Floral citrus hop aromas. Deep malty pine resin flavor with a slight alcohol finish.

12 oz bottle. Pours a foggy gold with a nice off white head that leaves a gorgeous lace. The aroma is floral and hoppy, with a nice caramel and almost bready lingerings. The flavors are pretty much the same, with a little more sweetness, which is apparent from the honey. The mouth feel is great. Light carbonation, wonderful consistency, and a great dry finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Best by 14MAY13 Nice copper colored ale with a light creamy sheet. Smells like BO, apricot, peaches, resin, some pine and sweet malts. Nice nose. Flavor is malt, some cracker, some tea and peach. Overall the taste is more malty than I enjoy in a DIPA, but has a herbal character that seems appealing. medium on full bodied with moderate carb and a wet finish. Overall the beer isn’t bad, but nothing special. In fact, I’d recommend this for somebody that really loves DFH beers, seems to fall in line with their style.
