Name Origin: On the West Coast, surfers have a term for that perfect time of day, when the waves are breaking just right and it feels like you can ride forever. They call it Alchemy Hour. In Cleveland, our surfers have to work a little harder to find a perfect swell. Dressed in wetsuits, up at dawn, they camp out on the shores of Lake Erie in near-freezing temperatures, waiting for the ultimate wave. Crazy? Yes. Extreme? Definitely. Alchemy Hour Double IPA pays tribute to the North Coast’s unlikely surf bums and the ancient quest for liquid gold, wherever it may live: on the ocean, in a lake, in a bottle.

Style Origin: Distinctively American, the Double IPA or Imperial IPA is thought to have originated in California. This fairly new style is a heartier, hoppier version of the traditional IPA with a higher alcohol content, creating a very strong and flavorful drinking experience.

Flavor: Hop-forward with a balanced blend of Mosaic and Nugget hops

MALT Harrington 2-Row Base Malt: Allows color and flavor from other specialty malts to come through; makes for very clean beer Caramel 45: Contributes to amber color; provides complexity Honey Malt: Contributes sweetness

HOPS Mosaic: New U.S. hop; provides floral, tropical, fruity, and earthy characteristics Nugget: U.S. bittering hop; provides floral, resiny aroma and flavor Cascade: U.S. hop with citrus characteristics for aroma

Pairs With: Smoked beef brisket, grilled lamb, sharp and rich cheeses, and sweet desserts

Shelf Life: 90 days

Great malt forward DIPA here. The bittering is there and is just enough to save this very malty DIPA. The hops are citrus and heavy floral almost like perfume or potporri. Good stuff for sure.

Bottle. Clear dark orange pour, little 1/4 inch disc of carbonation and and aroma of bitter oranges. Flavor is rich creamy malty, vanilla melded with bitter oranges and cream and dangerously drinkable at 9.4%. Solid.

12oz bottle poured golden amber to almost orange color with quickly dissipating white head. The aroma is strong and sweet in the floral sense. A solid medium bodied dipa with strong characteristics of floral hops and sweet as in honey almost cloyingly sweet. Get some bitterness from the hops but its almost mild as such to what you are use to for a dipa. On the backend of this I do pick up some citrus flavors mild as such they are there. Very good dipa.

Draft at Taps 25, Lansing. Hazy medium orange-brown body, thin cream head. Nose and body of pulpy grapefruit rind, bitter and sweet but not syrupy or cloying. Alcohol noticeable. Solid beer, not a standout.

Bottle pour - May 2013 best by date. Strong aromas of citrus and resin. Very bitter - just a notch below Hopslam and it’s brethren

Bottle. Pours light copper with a dissipating white head. Nose is dominated by pineapple with some earthy pine notes. Taste is light citrus and pine with a bready malt profile. Palate is medium with a decent carb. A little different than your average west coast style IPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Ericular (603) - Minnesota, USA - MAR 31, 2013
Pours clear copper orange with thin off-white head and good lacing. Aroma is peach, pear, and tropical fruit, with piney hops. Taste is big hops into sweet fruits - mango and pineapple. Then some alcohol in the effervescence, into a moderately bitter finish lingering on the sides of the tongue. Afterwards, bitterness mellows and the malt finally makes an appearance, complimented by the warmth. Palate is very full-bodied and thick with a decent amount of carbonation. This is a full-strength, flavorful beer.
