COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Name Origin: On the West Coast, surfers have a term for that perfect time of day, when the waves are breaking just right and it feels like you can ride forever. They call it Alchemy Hour. In Cleveland, our surfers have to work a little harder to find a perfect swell. Dressed in wetsuits, up at dawn, they camp out on the shores of Lake Erie in near-freezing temperatures, waiting for the ultimate wave. Crazy? Yes. Extreme? Definitely. Alchemy Hour Double IPA pays tribute to the North Coast’s unlikely surf bums and the ancient quest for liquid gold, wherever it may live: on the ocean, in a lake, in a bottle.

Style Origin: Distinctively American, the Double IPA or Imperial IPA is thought to have originated in California. This fairly new style is a heartier, hoppier version of the traditional IPA with a higher alcohol content, creating a very strong and flavorful drinking experience.

Flavor: Hop-forward with a balanced blend of Mosaic and Nugget hops

Ingredients:
MALT Harrington 2-Row Base Malt: Allows color and flavor from other specialty malts to come through; makes for very clean beer Caramel 45: Contributes to amber color; provides complexity Honey Malt: Contributes sweetness

HOPS Mosaic: New U.S. hop; provides floral, tropical, fruity, and earthy characteristics Nugget: U.S. bittering hop; provides floral, resiny aroma and flavor Cascade: U.S. hop with citrus characteristics for aroma

Pairs With: Smoked beef brisket, grilled lamb, sharp and rich cheeses, and sweet desserts

Shelf Life: 90 days

The extra hops are evident early in the aroma with overflowing grapefruit and sweet citrus. The citrus hops hit first, but the pine comes in at the end. Sweet malt and citrus balance with bitter hops brilliantly. With a combination of Mosaic, Nugget, and Cascade hops, I’ve never had a beer quite like this. At 80 IBUs and 9.4% ABV, this is quite a hefty beer, but it should be. Another outstanding offering from Great Lakes

One of the best I’ve had in awhile. Bottle drink by 5/14/13. Tropical fruity hop forward balanced with sweet maltyness. Excellent.

Bottle thanks to Hopscotch. Clear amber pour with an off white head. Mild hoppy aromas. Crisp and clean with wonderful citrus flavored hop notes. Good balance and mouthfeel. Impressive....

12 ounce bottle from Studio B, Fayetteville. Pours a clear amber color with a medium sized off-white head. Decent head retention. Big toffee malt aroma with candied citrus, citrus, herbal and resin hops. The taste is toffee malts with some nutty notes, resin, tropical and citrus hops. Medium-full bodied. Just a little bit too drinkable.

Bottle. Pours with a clear burnt golden hued body with a small white head. Aromas are citrusy, floral, papaya, caramel, flowers, tangerine and strong peachy hues. Light resin. Flavors are lightly sweet, nutty, floral, citrus. Strong resiny and grassy notes. Medium carbonation, off dry, lightly warming.

12oz bottle from drake party center, Kalamazoo, mi. Deep opaque orange pour with inch of offwhite head. Very floral hop aroma, a little on the light side. Mellow carbonation, watery mouthfeel, clean finish. Taste is pine hop tinges with lots of smooth melon flavor, Carmel hops as well. Light tasting for the ABV, veeeery mellow, low IBU. Not a huge fan.

12 oz. bottle from miketd. Thanks! Best by 05/21/13. Pours an orange color with a small head. The aroma is lovely. Good fruity nose with some citrus. I really love it’s fruity character. It does have some strong alcohol showiing. The taste is sweet fruity. This has a lot of tropical fruit flavor in it and is a good DIPA. I might like it better if it was slightly lower in alcohol to to something like 8 or 8.5%. Still good.

Pours hazy orange small light head not a lot of carbonation bubbles. Smells fruity hoppy and orange like. Taste is creamy and fruity and also a slight caramel taste. Slightly bitter and dry warm finish, I do not taste the alcohol but do feel it, nice beer.

This is an amazing beer and definitely the best new beer I’ve had in 2013. Top 5 IPA probably and Top 10 definitely.
