Name Origin: On the West Coast, surfers have a term for that perfect time of day, when the waves are breaking just right and it feels like you can ride forever. They call it Alchemy Hour. In Cleveland, our surfers have to work a little harder to find a perfect swell. Dressed in wetsuits, up at dawn, they camp out on the shores of Lake Erie in near-freezing temperatures, waiting for the ultimate wave. Crazy? Yes. Extreme? Definitely. Alchemy Hour Double IPA pays tribute to the North Coast’s unlikely surf bums and the ancient quest for liquid gold, wherever it may live: on the ocean, in a lake, in a bottle.

Style Origin: Distinctively American, the Double IPA or Imperial IPA is thought to have originated in California. This fairly new style is a heartier, hoppier version of the traditional IPA with a higher alcohol content, creating a very strong and flavorful drinking experience.

Flavor: Hop-forward with a balanced blend of Mosaic and Nugget hops

MALT Harrington 2-Row Base Malt: Allows color and flavor from other specialty malts to come through; makes for very clean beer Caramel 45: Contributes to amber color; provides complexity Honey Malt: Contributes sweetness

HOPS Mosaic: New U.S. hop; provides floral, tropical, fruity, and earthy characteristics Nugget: U.S. bittering hop; provides floral, resiny aroma and flavor Cascade: U.S. hop with citrus characteristics for aroma

Pairs With: Smoked beef brisket, grilled lamb, sharp and rich cheeses, and sweet desserts

Shelf Life: 90 days

Exactly how I like the DIPAS, lots of great fruit, floral, and well balanced. Hop flavors blend nicely and arn’t overly harsh. Alcohol is pretty noticeable and everything is pretty big when drinking this beer. Starting to stock my fridge with a little more lagers for summer but this one is a great nice big and tasty one before it gets real warm. Well done, one of my favorite double IPAs.

Bottle. The pour is a golden orange, vibrant. The aroma is big Mosaic Hops, with some sweetness behind it. The taste is bitter up front, then smoothes out and you get a lot of the hops, and then bitterness in the end. A well rounded taste process that plays games with the Palate. Has a lot of earthiness to it. I like my iipa’s a little more mellow, but I can see how hop heads would love this one.

Amber orange color with a creamy off white head. Big fresh citrus and tropical fruit hop nose. Syrupy mouthfeel. Tons of tropical fruit, grapefruit rind, manderin orange, apricot jam, toasted English muffin, and alcohol flavors. Big juicey hop head beer. Gets better the more you drink.

Orange/Copper pour with a thin white head. Aroma is pine and tropical fruit. Caramelized pineapple. Bready malt under all that. Flavour is caramel, bready malt, piney and herbal hop. Light medicinal character. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: FEB 26, 2014 Rerate as Chillwave DIPA, served in the same uber rare GL snifter: I utterly loved Alchemy Hour because it was insanely juicy and nicely balanced. While the new batch is still pretty fruity there is more dankness and raw bitterness in this one. Not as wonderfully balanced either. Still this is a very tasty beer but not the mind blown experience I had last year. -1 aroma, -1 taste, -1 overall

Bottle and served in my uber rare GL snifter: Pours a beautiful sunset coppery hue with a lasting head and very good lace. The aroma may be the juiciest I have ever encountered so far with lush melons, mangoes, pineapple, pear, peaches and ever slight pine and resin. HOLY MOTHER this is just intoxicating! The taste is as expected a letdown after the nose but hardly garbage either, still plenty of fruit, bitterness and caramel malts with a touch of biscuit too. BRILLIANT balance and everything I want in a big IPA. The mouth feel is smooth yet has an edge. The last time a hoppy beer moved me like this was batch #1 of PW Ninja vs Unicorn, this is uber worlderly. BRAVO GREAT LAKES!

UPDATED: APR 9, 2013 Pours an orangeish amber with initially a large white head that fades pretty quick but leaves a decent amount of lacing. Aroma of pineapple, melon, pine, floral, hops and malts. Taste is melon and pineapple up front with hops, malts, and citrus backing it up. Different taste for an IIPA, original. Alcohol is hidden well. Decent finish, not long but not short, with malts and hops in the aftertaste. Crisp yet heavy. Medium body with a bit of a creamy palate and moderate carbonation. Very great and definitely one all IPA fans need to try!

Bottle. Pours a clear copper color with a light tannish white head. Some lacing as the head settles. Nice aroma of melon, pineapple and slighl florals. Sweet upfront, fruity, apple, and then BAM a pretty solid wall of bitterness buckles your mouth at the end and then lingers on. Medium mouthfeel. Flavorful.

Aroma is muted hops and citrus. Hard for me to smell anything strong though. Very muted. Taste is hoppy, citrus, with a little vanilla. Has a bit of a tang at the end, but otherwise very smooth.
