COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Name Origin: On the West Coast, surfers have a term for that perfect time of day, when the waves are breaking just right and it feels like you can ride forever. They call it Alchemy Hour. In Cleveland, our surfers have to work a little harder to find a perfect swell. Dressed in wetsuits, up at dawn, they camp out on the shores of Lake Erie in near-freezing temperatures, waiting for the ultimate wave. Crazy? Yes. Extreme? Definitely. Alchemy Hour Double IPA pays tribute to the North Coast’s unlikely surf bums and the ancient quest for liquid gold, wherever it may live: on the ocean, in a lake, in a bottle.

Style Origin: Distinctively American, the Double IPA or Imperial IPA is thought to have originated in California. This fairly new style is a heartier, hoppier version of the traditional IPA with a higher alcohol content, creating a very strong and flavorful drinking experience.

Flavor: Hop-forward with a balanced blend of Mosaic and Nugget hops

Ingredients:
MALT Harrington 2-Row Base Malt: Allows color and flavor from other specialty malts to come through; makes for very clean beer Caramel 45: Contributes to amber color; provides complexity Honey Malt: Contributes sweetness

HOPS Mosaic: New U.S. hop; provides floral, tropical, fruity, and earthy characteristics Nugget: U.S. bittering hop; provides floral, resiny aroma and flavor Cascade: U.S. hop with citrus characteristics for aroma

Pairs With: Smoked beef brisket, grilled lamb, sharp and rich cheeses, and sweet desserts

Shelf Life: 90 days

Bottle @ home, via trade with Homer321 (I think). Thanks bro! Pours a murky yellow orange appearance with a cream colored head. Floral, grapefruity, bready aroma with a bit of pine and caramel. Toasty malty, spicy, piney, grapefruity hoppy, mild caramel flavor. Decent but maybe I’ll give a bit fresher bottle a shot.

7/28/13. 12oz bottle thanks to hopscotch! Lighty hazed orange pour, reminds me of dark orange Jell-O, with a 2-finger khaki head that fades to a small ring but laces plentifully. Light citrus and a burst of pine on the front of the aroma with some caramel lingering in there. Lightly sweet, malty presence in the flavor, both doughy and caramelly, with lingering citrus and pine. Finishes dry with grapefruit peel. A touch fizzy on the tongue. Not bad!

Pour is darker amber with a tight billowy light tan head. Nose is very aromatic, light biscuit and dough with a huge hop punch, tons of grapefruit juice and light herbal notes. The taste is a bit more bready and doughy, hops are still huge behind, grapefruit ad strong tropical fruit flavors with a faint herbal touch and virtually no bitterness. Medium body, moderate carbonation and a fairly dry finish.

Crisp ruby and peach-tinted copper coloured body with a bright bronze glow and a nice two centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of alcohol, resinous hops, pine, strong malt and some light grapes. Full-bodied; Strong rich malt and sweet flavours with a good piercing resin and syrupy hop flavour that balances well. Aftertaste shows a lot of alcohol, some light fruit flavours, a hint of resin, a lot of caster sugar sweetness and a rich, hoppy finish that doesn’t overwhelm the palate. Overall, a very well crafted Imperial IPA that is strong, but doesn’t seem as strong as it really is - the hops worked well and the balance was in check. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in McLean, Virginia on 02-April-2013 for US$2.79 sampled at home in Washington on 09-July-2013.

Pours a deep amber with a large sticky tan foam. Mild soft hoppy taste that builds after swallowing. Earthy hoppy taste that stays minutes longer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy

Cloudy dark orange color. 12 oz bottle. Big malt body and sweet texture. Orange sugary candy flavors. Sticky pine finish. Resin and citrus fruits on the finish as well. Feels like the hops are a little fade and muted but this is a nice drink either way.

Thanks to ian for this. Pours a hazy dark golden with a small white ring. Taste is upfront pine and citrus hop bitterness. Nicely balanced with sweet bready malts.

Bottle from the Hope Valley Bottle Shop, Durham. Nice deep orange pour, looks almost viscous in places but still has a bright glow to it. Big-ass tropical facepalm in the nose, floral and inviting as hell. Hints of resin and pepper in there too, but mostly the main ingredients. Full mouthfeel, medium carbonation. Flavors tend to be tilted a bit to the sweeter end of the spectrum, but there’s still plenty of complexity and maximum dankness.
