Name Origin: On the West Coast, surfers have a term for that perfect time of day, when the waves are breaking just right and it feels like you can ride forever. They call it Alchemy Hour. In Cleveland, our surfers have to work a little harder to find a perfect swell. Dressed in wetsuits, up at dawn, they camp out on the shores of Lake Erie in near-freezing temperatures, waiting for the ultimate wave. Crazy? Yes. Extreme? Definitely. Alchemy Hour Double IPA pays tribute to the North Coast’s unlikely surf bums and the ancient quest for liquid gold, wherever it may live: on the ocean, in a lake, in a bottle.

Style Origin: Distinctively American, the Double IPA or Imperial IPA is thought to have originated in California. This fairly new style is a heartier, hoppier version of the traditional IPA with a higher alcohol content, creating a very strong and flavorful drinking experience.

Flavor: Hop-forward with a balanced blend of Mosaic and Nugget hops

MALT Harrington 2-Row Base Malt: Allows color and flavor from other specialty malts to come through; makes for very clean beer Caramel 45: Contributes to amber color; provides complexity Honey Malt: Contributes sweetness

HOPS Mosaic: New U.S. hop; provides floral, tropical, fruity, and earthy characteristics Nugget: U.S. bittering hop; provides floral, resiny aroma and flavor Cascade: U.S. hop with citrus characteristics for aroma

Pairs With: Smoked beef brisket, grilled lamb, sharp and rich cheeses, and sweet desserts

Shelf Life: 90 days

Draught pint 2/28/2013, Brazenhead, Dublin, OH. Small head of foamy white bubbles, orange bubbles, good lacing. Aroma deep, hoppy, largely floral. Heavy on the bitter, almost unilaterally, but sweet floral-ness holds this together. Really good.

Bottle shared. Thanks Gregg! Lovely honey and orange marmalade nose with some earthy notes in the background. Well-balanced and has a big malt profile on the palate. Doesn’t feel overly heavy, but very drinkable. More orange marmalade character. At first a harsh bitterness, but mellows out substantially as it warms. Good stuff.

Pours deep orange, closing on amber maybe. Aroma is not really floral or fruit - hops are more from the earthy and slightly harsher side. For some reason reminds me Põhjala’s Põhja Konn. Body is malty, nicely fragrant - which is unusual for such a big beer - and masterfully balanced with the earthy hop profile. Glad I could try this!

Beautiful double. Copper color. Thin white head. Great lacing. Nose is tropical, but flavor is more resinous. Well balanced bitterness vs malt. High ABV is well hidden. No booziness in the finish. Yeah Cleveland!

Picked up single 12-oz bottle from Heritage Liquors in Maplewood, MN as Alchemy Hour Double IPA. Pours a semi-clear golden orange colored brew with an average sized off-white head that slowly dissipates and leaves behind some excellent lacing. Aroma of light grapefruit, tangerine, more tropical fruits and caramel malt. Taste is medium bodied with flavors of a solid tropical fruit-style IPA. Finish is semi-sweet with a lingering bitterness. Will turn into an American style barleywine if not drank fresh. Tongue shock recovery time, about 3 minutes.

Pours orange with big frothy white longlasting head. Aroma of pine and citrus. Above medium on the palate with not much carbonation. Citrus flavors and a really nice balanced finish. Interestingly despite the 9 percent ABV there is no booziness. I will be enjoying this again.

A lovely red/gold body with a healthy, well laced off-white head. A soft nose features fresh grapefruit and lemon with caramel malt. This beer has a really nice blend of fresh fruity hops including grapefruit, lime, kiwi, melon and orange. A mild soapiness is appealing. Pepper and light caramel malt round out the taste profile. The body is slick and slight above average in density. Carbonation is light but appropriate. The finish is fruity with a controlled sweetness

Rated on 7-24-2016. The appearance of this bottled beer is a medium sized semi-fizzy off-white head that is mostly lasting, bright amber transparent body, very fizzy, lively, fast rising carbonation observed, one ring of lacing. The aroma is citrus hops, light pine hops, juicy, grapefruit, fruity, spicy, earthy, and caramel malt. The flavor presents medium-heavy bitterness, citrus hops, very earthy, grapefruit, fruity, and caramel malt. The mouthfeel of this beer is heavy and moderate carbonation. This beer is medium-full bodied. A very quaffable sipping beer with a very good taste. It is worth trying and it is a beer that I would drink again.

Strong pine aroma, but one dimensional. Also some caramelly malt. Just a little hazy with amber body and a two finger thick head. Pretty sweet taste, with some of the hop flavor and a soapy bitterness at the end. Medium body.

Draught pint at O’Riley & Conway’s Irish Pub in Janesville, WI, today. Darkish amber-bronze with a fine, delicate head leaving significant sugar-crystal residue as it and the beer recede very quicky, too quickly...super-fresh, big hoppy ripe pit-fruit nose, apricots and peaches and perhaps some mangoes, this is another indicator for me that Mosaic may be my favorite current hop variety, certainly for these strong, sweet IPAs it does the trick; also a bit of cedar or sandalwood, more complex as I take more whiffs than my initial nosing...on the front of the palate, very sweet and perhaps a touch syrupy, moderately bitter and just a very faint touch tart in the middle, with bitterness slowly growing but never dominating at the end as it would in, say, Ruination...this finishes with a highly enjoyable fruit-sweet and medium-bitter lightly dry character. Overall like many sweeter IIPAs it is a bit thick and overly juicy to my tastes, especially as it warms - which made me drink it perhaps a bit too fast - but in general the balance is solid, and this is highly drinkable and enjoyable.
