COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Name Origin: On the West Coast, surfers have a term for that perfect time of day, when the waves are breaking just right and it feels like you can ride forever. They call it Alchemy Hour. In Cleveland, our surfers have to work a little harder to find a perfect swell. Dressed in wetsuits, up at dawn, they camp out on the shores of Lake Erie in near-freezing temperatures, waiting for the ultimate wave. Crazy? Yes. Extreme? Definitely. Alchemy Hour Double IPA pays tribute to the North Coastís unlikely surf bums and the ancient quest for liquid gold, wherever it may live: on the ocean, in a lake, in a bottle.

Style Origin: Distinctively American, the Double IPA or Imperial IPA is thought to have originated in California. This fairly new style is a heartier, hoppier version of the traditional IPA with a higher alcohol content, creating a very strong and flavorful drinking experience.

Flavor: Hop-forward with a balanced blend of Mosaic and Nugget hops

Ingredients:
MALT Harrington 2-Row Base Malt: Allows color and flavor from other specialty malts to come through; makes for very clean beer Caramel 45: Contributes to amber color; provides complexity Honey Malt: Contributes sweetness

HOPS Mosaic: New U.S. hop; provides floral, tropical, fruity, and earthy characteristics Nugget: U.S. bittering hop; provides floral, resiny aroma and flavor Cascade: U.S. hop with citrus characteristics for aroma

Pairs With: Smoked beef brisket, grilled lamb, sharp and rich cheeses, and sweet desserts

Shelf Life: 90 days

UPDATED: MAR 26, 2014 Aroma of hops but not overpowering. I wish there was more hops. The alcohol shines through quite a bit. More bitter than balanced. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Tap@Jolly Scholar, Cleveland, USA. Highly overaged, vinegar like aroma with honey. Deep golden color with small white head and clear liquid. Medium/strong, stale taste with honey and overaged fruits. Medium body with low carbonation. Overall, clearly overkill considering the overaged qualities.

UPDATED: APR 24, 2016 Poured from a bottle. Pours a bright clear orange Amber with a thin white head. Light carbonation and minimal lacing. Strong aroma of pine and sweet citrus. Starts out juicy and sweet then finishes dry and leaves a moderately bitter aftertaste. OK, but not as good as I had hoped for. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

The beer clear light amber with an off white head. The aroma has lots of tropical fruit, caramel malt, grapefruit, pineapple and some some stone fruit. It has a fairly full body with soft carbonation. The taste has sweet caramel malt, grapefruit, dank funk and some spice. The finish has lots of funk and grapefruit pith. Pretty solid.

Wed Tap at Vinsettaís garage. Pours deep ruby honey, small off white head. Aroma is Christmas tree pine, pineapple, resin, dank hops, some citrus, mild tropical fruits. But tons of pine. Christmas tree in a glass. Flavor is pine, lots of it, really nice bitter hops, orange, pineapple, sort of sticky sugary mouthfeel, dank hops, mango, sugar sweetness. Really good.

2016. Pours clear amber gold with substantial head and stucco lacing. Nose is sweet off the bat, a little bit of herbal earthiness riding quietly underneath, over-ripe pineapple and viscous apricot, an ephemeral floral quality. Flavor...resembles my iffy-ness with Hopslam and the added honey sweetness. Itís very drinkable, but the beautiful complexity of Mosaic and floral cascade are inevitably dominated by sweet specialty malt. I know that a lot of Clevelanders have had a falling-out with GLBC recently, and this brew was their ultimatum. By all means itís a solid and crushable brew. Just a tad heavy-handed on the sweetness for a DIPA. Iím not exactly looking for a "brew to guarantee me a headache the next morning" kind of sweetness. But itís worth picking up to let you decide for yourself. Cheers!
