Name Origin: On the West Coast, surfers have a term for that perfect time of day, when the waves are breaking just right and it feels like you can ride forever. They call it Alchemy Hour. In Cleveland, our surfers have to work a little harder to find a perfect swell. Dressed in wetsuits, up at dawn, they camp out on the shores of Lake Erie in near-freezing temperatures, waiting for the ultimate wave. Crazy? Yes. Extreme? Definitely. Alchemy Hour Double IPA pays tribute to the North Coastís unlikely surf bums and the ancient quest for liquid gold, wherever it may live: on the ocean, in a lake, in a bottle.

Style Origin: Distinctively American, the Double IPA or Imperial IPA is thought to have originated in California. This fairly new style is a heartier, hoppier version of the traditional IPA with a higher alcohol content, creating a very strong and flavorful drinking experience.

Flavor: Hop-forward with a balanced blend of Mosaic and Nugget hops

MALT Harrington 2-Row Base Malt: Allows color and flavor from other specialty malts to come through; makes for very clean beer Caramel 45: Contributes to amber color; provides complexity Honey Malt: Contributes sweetness

HOPS Mosaic: New U.S. hop; provides floral, tropical, fruity, and earthy characteristics Nugget: U.S. bittering hop; provides floral, resiny aroma and flavor Cascade: U.S. hop with citrus characteristics for aroma

Pairs With: Smoked beef brisket, grilled lamb, sharp and rich cheeses, and sweet desserts

Shelf Life: 90 days

Bottle from Dorthy Land Market. The pour is clear orange with a fresh pine hop aroma. The flavor is good, just different. Very piney with a bitter finish, and it is indeed fresh. But, it also finishes a tad hot with a medicinal taste to it. Maybe the rough edges will smooth a little over the months. Letís hope.

Aroma - Tangerine, citrusy, piney, and a little boozy Appearance - very clear copper with a nice white head Taste - initial light bitterness with a smooth sweet and bitter finish Mouthfeel - light/medium bodied, very smooth, and slightly sticky Overall - really good beer. Hops balance the malt backbone of this beer nicely. Great tangerine aromas really compliment the beer

12 oz bottle pours a clear orange with small off-white head that leaves lots of lacing. Smells something like marijuana, but the aroma has lots of grapefruit and floral hops, Taste is delicate and almost sweet - unusual for an IIPA, with lots of caramel malts in the middle before a drier, hoppy finish. Body is medium with a sticky mouthfeel and perfect carbonation. I had braced myself for another puckering and dank hop bomb, but this one pleasantly surprised me. Very well balanced, and as subltle as a 9.4% IIPA can get. Another winner from Great Lakes.

Bottle thanks to trade with weihenweizen! Pours a hazy golden brown with lasting off-white head that leaves moderate lace. Aroma of big citrus hop notes over sweet caramel malt. Taste follows with a clean bittersweet finish; you can tell itís boozy, but no real burn. Solid DIPA.

Received in a trade with mdg164, 12oz bottle poured into an English pint glass -- very tiny tightly packed white bubbles sit atop a caramel colored clear beer. Aroma is clear and strong citrus with the resin characteristic, sticky sweet. Flavor is delicate for a DIPA, in a nice way. Well crafted, hops donít dominate but neither are they overpowered. Very enjoyable!

Ehh. I mean it's a good IPA.....too sweet, but good. A lot of floral spices. BUT, it's Great Lakes so it is a quality brew. I certainly wouldn't pick up a case though. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Incredible double ipa. Smells is dank and marijuana esque. Tastes like grapefruit juice with an alcohol punch. Hoppy finish as well. Pours a wonderful copper color with a thin white head. Crushable for 9% alcohol. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
