Name Origin: On the West Coast, surfers have a term for that perfect time of day, when the waves are breaking just right and it feels like you can ride forever. They call it Alchemy Hour. In Cleveland, our surfers have to work a little harder to find a perfect swell. Dressed in wetsuits, up at dawn, they camp out on the shores of Lake Erie in near-freezing temperatures, waiting for the ultimate wave. Crazy? Yes. Extreme? Definitely. Alchemy Hour Double IPA pays tribute to the North Coastís unlikely surf bums and the ancient quest for liquid gold, wherever it may live: on the ocean, in a lake, in a bottle.

Style Origin: Distinctively American, the Double IPA or Imperial IPA is thought to have originated in California. This fairly new style is a heartier, hoppier version of the traditional IPA with a higher alcohol content, creating a very strong and flavorful drinking experience.

Flavor: Hop-forward with a balanced blend of Mosaic and Nugget hops

MALT Harrington 2-Row Base Malt: Allows color and flavor from other specialty malts to come through; makes for very clean beer Caramel 45: Contributes to amber color; provides complexity Honey Malt: Contributes sweetness

HOPS Mosaic: New U.S. hop; provides floral, tropical, fruity, and earthy characteristics Nugget: U.S. bittering hop; provides floral, resiny aroma and flavor Cascade: U.S. hop with citrus characteristics for aroma

Pairs With: Smoked beef brisket, grilled lamb, sharp and rich cheeses, and sweet desserts

Shelf Life: 90 days

UPDATED: MAR 11, 2013 Amber colored, foamy white head. Aroma of tropical fruit, sweetness, mangos. Not too hoppy, honey balances aroma. Piney, tropical, citrus flavor up front, that gives way to a sweet, honey malt background. Pine and resin in flavor. It?s complex very very drinkable, and surprisingly balanced and sweet. A new favorite. Earthy, hoppy, sweet. Medium body, that how?s down smooth. Not harsh at all.

Growler from Daily Growler in Upper Arlington. Murky amber pour with an off-white head and frothy sheets of lacing. Aroma of tropcal fruit, touch of honey, spice. Tastes are bitter sweet, grapefruit citrus, honey, biscuit malt. Full oily palate with even grass and floral bitter finish. Very nice.

Pour into snifter, amber with small head, very nice lacing though. Aroma of mango, earthy musk, topped with overpowering bursting, bright citrus/floral notes. Tastes piney with complex, shining citrus, minimal boozy flavor, not overly-resiny, delicate linger. Very unique IIPA!

What a treat it is to find a beer from my hometown brewery that Iíve never had hundreds of miles from home. Bottle from Wine Warehouse, Charlottesville. Pours a pretty clear amber, an inch of beige head that laces nicely. Sweet dark fruits, pine, citrus in the nose. Thick almost syrupy flavors in the mouth. Dark fruits, soap, pine, citrus, and finishes with pepper.

Bottle into pint glass. Pours a cool orangey clear color. Lots of very sticky white head and lacing that just keeps hanging around. Citrusy dank aroma, mmmmm. Mouthfeel is moderate especially for this abv beer. Probably as light as it can be for a 9%+er but with slight stickiness. Taste is wow, just wow. NZ hops are what I taste first off. With lots of citrus, mango, papaya, all sorts of tropical fruit. A tiny tinge of alcohol flavor, but barely, and Iím sensitive to it. Mild alcohol warmth. Damn is this a good IIPA, and well needed by Great Lakes. Erie Monster is forgettable, Commodore Perry is crap... but this one is a winner Iíll buy every year!

Very strong and distinct IPA that comes across well bodied with a good aftertaste. This is a hoppier version of a normal IPA.

Pours a hazy orange/copper with slight head. Aroma is of citrus, sweetness. Taste of caramel, citrus - definitely some sweetness. Very smooth (alcohol hidden, not too much of a hoppy bite). Pretty good. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

With Z, pours a deep rusty orange color with a small head. Nose is sweet passion fruit, aromatic and flavorful. Taste is bittersweet with deep citrus, with a predominance of passion fruit, with very small resin.... very smooth and a real palate pleaser. The alcohol very well hidden ! Finishes on bittersweet tropical notes with a moderately long finish. Quaff Score 9 / 10

Bottle. Pours a hazy amber orange with an off white head and sweet, hoppy, citrusy aroma. Taste is bittersweet, lots of hops, citrus, caramel and complex fruity flavors leading to a strong bitter finish. Delicious DIPA
