COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Name Origin: On the West Coast, surfers have a term for that perfect time of day, when the waves are breaking just right and it feels like you can ride forever. They call it Alchemy Hour. In Cleveland, our surfers have to work a little harder to find a perfect swell. Dressed in wetsuits, up at dawn, they camp out on the shores of Lake Erie in near-freezing temperatures, waiting for the ultimate wave. Crazy? Yes. Extreme? Definitely. Alchemy Hour Double IPA pays tribute to the North Coast’s unlikely surf bums and the ancient quest for liquid gold, wherever it may live: on the ocean, in a lake, in a bottle.

Style Origin: Distinctively American, the Double IPA or Imperial IPA is thought to have originated in California. This fairly new style is a heartier, hoppier version of the traditional IPA with a higher alcohol content, creating a very strong and flavorful drinking experience.

Flavor: Hop-forward with a balanced blend of Mosaic and Nugget hops

Ingredients:
MALT Harrington 2-Row Base Malt: Allows color and flavor from other specialty malts to come through; makes for very clean beer Caramel 45: Contributes to amber color; provides complexity Honey Malt: Contributes sweetness

HOPS Mosaic: New U.S. hop; provides floral, tropical, fruity, and earthy characteristics Nugget: U.S. bittering hop; provides floral, resiny aroma and flavor Cascade: U.S. hop with citrus characteristics for aroma

Pairs With: Smoked beef brisket, grilled lamb, sharp and rich cheeses, and sweet desserts

Shelf Life: 90 days

Out of the tap, this has those distinctive floral notes I’ve been looking for. Hard to tell about appearance in a dimly lit pub, but appeared to be light brown amber. Brief white head. Nose is floral with a bit of roasted malt. On the tongue, again floral with faint lemon-grapefruit citrus on a lightly roasted malt frame. Medium body. This is the imperial version of Maine Brewing’s Peeper - More substantial, and leaning slightly more towards the bitter then the floral but not the tyupical "in your face" bitter of many 2xIPAs. Good stuff - making room in the fridge for some now.

Aroma is pine, citrus and big hops. The flavor is grapefruit, fruit, hop resin, mild sugar/sweetness notes and a tangy/bitter/warming finish.

On tap at MacGregor’s. Poured a orange tinted amber. Slightly off white head that lasted for me and nice lace. Aroma is pure grapefruit. Body is somewhat slick and oily. Taste is hoppy grapefruit. The malts and hops balance is very good. Alcohol is hidden. Citrus lingers and bitters in the finish. Another winner from Great Lakes.

Pours clear amber with small off white head. Smell has huge notes of pine, resin, mango and citrus. Taste is floral hop, pine, citrus and resin. Very balanced. Medium body, light carbonation.

At Tap house Des Plaines. Hides the strength well. All the hop flavors, grassy, herbal, citrus, floral, etc . .all hitting at different times. Sweet malt but it balances well. Serving: Tap

On tap at Joe Canals West Deptford.
Appearance: The body has a mild haze with an amber hue. A creamt light tan head sits on top.
Aroma: Huge aroma here, sweet and fruity with passion fruit, peach, pinapple, and mango.
Taste: Mildly to moderately bitter with a firm malt base. Big hop flavor, mango and persimmon are noted along with a hint of bitter orange and pine towards the end. This is bold and flavorful, front loaded with huge fruit and with a touch of bitterness at the end.
Palate: Full-bodied with gentle filling carbonation.
Overall: Last year I did not like this. I don’t know if they changed it or my palate changed but this is phenomenal, definitely a top tier imperial IPA.

Floral, fruity aroma and taste. Honey and alcohol combine for a distinct sweetness, but well balanced with the hops. Very good complexity and balance of hops and malt.

(bottle - 12 oz) Under the Chillwave label. Cloudy orange pour. Really nice and inviting citrus and slightly peppery hop aroma. Lots of sweet citrus in the flavor with a very mild hop bitterness coming up at the end. Mostly sweet grapefruit. Really good.
