Name Origin: On the West Coast, surfers have a term for that perfect time of day, when the waves are breaking just right and it feels like you can ride forever. They call it Alchemy Hour. In Cleveland, our surfers have to work a little harder to find a perfect swell. Dressed in wetsuits, up at dawn, they camp out on the shores of Lake Erie in near-freezing temperatures, waiting for the ultimate wave. Crazy? Yes. Extreme? Definitely. Alchemy Hour Double IPA pays tribute to the North Coast’s unlikely surf bums and the ancient quest for liquid gold, wherever it may live: on the ocean, in a lake, in a bottle.

Style Origin: Distinctively American, the Double IPA or Imperial IPA is thought to have originated in California. This fairly new style is a heartier, hoppier version of the traditional IPA with a higher alcohol content, creating a very strong and flavorful drinking experience.

Flavor: Hop-forward with a balanced blend of Mosaic and Nugget hops

MALT Harrington 2-Row Base Malt: Allows color and flavor from other specialty malts to come through; makes for very clean beer Caramel 45: Contributes to amber color; provides complexity Honey Malt: Contributes sweetness

HOPS Mosaic: New U.S. hop; provides floral, tropical, fruity, and earthy characteristics Nugget: U.S. bittering hop; provides floral, resiny aroma and flavor Cascade: U.S. hop with citrus characteristics for aroma

Pairs With: Smoked beef brisket, grilled lamb, sharp and rich cheeses, and sweet desserts

Shelf Life: 90 days

UPDATED: SEP 27, 2013 Liquid pot. Gold pour. God damn it smells like good pot. If I knew what pot smelled like. Ok, maybe from college. This is great. Ok, a little follow up. This is a great beer that ages horribly. Don’t save some as a treat for later. Great Lakes will brew more. Drink it when you get it. I am drinkin/g it 4 months old, and am not enjoying it at all.

Very strong and distinct IPA that comes across well bodied with a good aftertaste. This is a hoppier version of a normal IPA.

Pours a hazy orange/copper with slight head. Aroma is of citrus, sweetness. Taste of caramel, citrus - definitely some sweetness. Very smooth (alcohol hidden, not too much of a hoppy bite). Pretty good. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

With Z, pours a deep rusty orange color with a small head. Nose is sweet passion fruit, aromatic and flavorful. Taste is bittersweet with deep citrus, with a predominance of passion fruit, with very small resin.... very smooth and a real palate pleaser. The alcohol very well hidden ! Finishes on bittersweet tropical notes with a moderately long finish. Quaff Score 9 / 10

Bottle. Pours a hazy amber orange with an off white head and sweet, hoppy, citrusy aroma. Taste is bittersweet, lots of hops, citrus, caramel and complex fruity flavors leading to a strong bitter finish. Delicious DIPA

Bottle at 4 months, should have gotten to this sooner. Pours copper with a slight off white head. Aroma is light grains, grapefruit, mango and pine. Flavor has some caramel sweetness, grapefruit followed by pine resin. Well done for a 9.4% IPA.

From a bottle poured an amber color with a fair amount of head. Hoppy flavor with a quick finish.

"Resiny pine and a sturdy malt backbone great the nose. Plays off one another well, though I admittedly prefer slightly more aromatic and citrusy hops in IIPAs. This is definitely a well made beer, though - balanced and tasty. Toasted malts and pine in the flavor. Solid feel. Not overdone. Thanks, heybeerman. Great Lakes is solid!"

On tap - had this beer while on vacation. Pour was typical light copper color with small head. Has great earthy hop aroma and subtle malt sweetness. Served very cold and some of the flavors were hidden. As the beer warmed a bit more of the flavors jumped out. Had this somewhat astrigent hop bite and then soothing sweetness from the malt on the finish. Overall a pretty good DIPA

Transfer from BA review on 3-9-13- Served on tap in a pint glass Appearance – Served an amber-orange color with a small white head. The head fades relatively fast leaving a nice level of lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma was quite nice although not too IPA like. It was very strong of a candied sugar aroma with some citrus and sugared fruit aromas. With these aromas are some lighter notes of a bready nature as well as the lightest bit of pine and earthy hop. Taste – The taste begins sweet and bready with the sweetness being, just as the nose discerns, with a strong candy taste with notes of fruitiness of pear, apple, and some citrus. As the flavors advance tropical fruit flavors of tangerine and some mango and papaya hit the tongue. The candied and fruit flavors remain throughout, although they lessen as the flavor advances. While the candied flavors dwindle the hop flavors get stronger in the middle and the end. A blend of grapefruit and pine hop start making their presence more known. In the end they get much more potent where they are joined by a peppery spice leaving an interesting taste blend of a resinous and bitter yet semi sweet flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel –The body of the beer was on the creamier side with a carbonation level that was rather low. The creaminess was quite nice for blending the sugary and hoppy flavors together in harmony while the carbonation made for a nice sipping beer. Overall – For a 9% abv brew the alcohol was very well concealed by the sweeter and hoppier flavors of the brew. While the alcohol was well hidden, it was still a nice slow drinking brew due to its resinous aftertaste and creamier body. It was a nice drinking double and one I would recommend for a try.
