Name Origin: On the West Coast, surfers have a term for that perfect time of day, when the waves are breaking just right and it feels like you can ride forever. They call it Alchemy Hour. In Cleveland, our surfers have to work a little harder to find a perfect swell. Dressed in wetsuits, up at dawn, they camp out on the shores of Lake Erie in near-freezing temperatures, waiting for the ultimate wave. Crazy? Yes. Extreme? Definitely. Alchemy Hour Double IPA pays tribute to the North Coast’s unlikely surf bums and the ancient quest for liquid gold, wherever it may live: on the ocean, in a lake, in a bottle.

Style Origin: Distinctively American, the Double IPA or Imperial IPA is thought to have originated in California. This fairly new style is a heartier, hoppier version of the traditional IPA with a higher alcohol content, creating a very strong and flavorful drinking experience.

Flavor: Hop-forward with a balanced blend of Mosaic and Nugget hops

MALT Harrington 2-Row Base Malt: Allows color and flavor from other specialty malts to come through; makes for very clean beer Caramel 45: Contributes to amber color; provides complexity Honey Malt: Contributes sweetness

HOPS Mosaic: New U.S. hop; provides floral, tropical, fruity, and earthy characteristics Nugget: U.S. bittering hop; provides floral, resiny aroma and flavor Cascade: U.S. hop with citrus characteristics for aroma

Pairs With: Smoked beef brisket, grilled lamb, sharp and rich cheeses, and sweet desserts

Shelf Life: 90 days

Fresh bottle from Sam’s Quik Shop in Durham. Pours a deep orange, getting close to red, slightly hazy with a light beige head. Good lacing and decent retention. Nose of tangerine and orange rind, grapefruit, resin, honey, slight sweet tea. Taste is definitely sweet, but it works well while fresh. Can’t imagine this tastes all that good after a month.

Nice balance of sweetness and bitterness. Strong hop flavor, although not as strong as I expected, given the strength and hops used. Nice lacing, and relatively smooth finish. Not my favorite Great Lakes, but well worth seeking out.

12oz bottle pours a clear dark copper/orange with a small khaki head. Sweet malt and hop aroma, caramel with tropical hops mango, papaya, pineapple, with citrus orange and light pine. Taste of sweet caramel malt, with light citrus and tropical hops, and a steady hop bitterness throughout. On the sweeter side, but fairly easy drinking and enjoyable.

on tap @ Party Town / Florence KY ---- Clear dark amber color, bubbly beige head cover, bands of lace. Taste is caramel malt with honey and hard biscuit in the palate, adding carbonation and solid citrus and hops on a finish that never completely drops the malt. There is alcohol warmth late on the back end. A big and really solid, well-balanced, well-conceived brew.

Pours a cloudy orangish amber. Thick, frothy head. Burst of grapefruit and lemon aromas. Slightly creamy mouthfeel, bitter hops but not too bitter. Lemon, resin, pine. Nice double IPA.

Bottle. Pours a clear golden amber. Aromas of citrus and tropical fruit are dominant; smells sweet. The sweetness is there in the taste, too, but that is balanced nicely with an assertive and lasting bitterness. Taste is sweet malts and juicy fruit. I like it a lot. Medium bodied, average carbonation, bitter finish.

Pours deep brown amber and mostly clear with an off-white head that fades fast to a rim and coating. Nice color; head ain't much. Aroma is jammy tropical papaya and pineapple. Taste is... wow! The jammy fruitiness carries right over from the aroma, with a crisp mouthfeel and some toasted malts. Finish follows with a citrus-savory bitterness. An amazingly easy-drinking and flavorful 9.5er - this is craft beer at its finest.

BOD 3/5/15. Almost clear pour that is medium amber with a moderate ruby cast. Normal head volume, outstanding retention and World Class lacing. Nice, but moderately intense, nose of tropical hops (mango, passion fruit) with a touch of spicy pepper over a slight caramel. Light medium body with a smooth texture. Above normal carbonation with a nice effervescence in the middle and a strong burst in the finish. The flavor profile is world class. It is reasonably intense, rather complex and very well balanced. The 9.4% alcohol is evident only in the finish. It begins with a burst of sweet fruit that separates into mango, passion fruit and orange. The middle effervesces into a mild orange rind bitterness over a fading caramel base sweetness with a touch of spicy pepper. The finish is a lingering subtle rind bitterness with alcohol notes.

Pours clear and amber, not much head. Aroma was boozey, some citrus fruit, and mild floral. Taste was alcohol and boozey, that masked most other flavors I hoping for. It was pretty bitter as well. I was expecting more out of this based on reviews and word of mouth but was let down.

Sampled from a bottle, this ale had a red and burnt orange pour and it gave a one finger white and faint off-white cover that receded to a thin layer and ring, the beer had a touch of haze, it left some spots and small fingers of lacing on the glass, the nose had aromas of citrus orange fruit hops with a touch of grass, toasted malt, some guava and lemon fruit, a little doughy bread, malt and candy sweetness, the flavors were toasted malt and citrus hops, orange fruit and a bit of guava, malt and bread sweetness, the finish had a hop bitterness and light citrus bite that lingered a bit on the tongue with malt sweetness trailing, the mouth feel was more than medium and it had some creamy feel to it, there was average carbonation, this beer had a good balance of hops and malt, a nice IPA2 drink.
