LinusStick (1831), Moon Twp, suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 17, 2008 A nice, if not typical, imperial stout. Aroma was nice. Strong coffee with a roasted malt note. Pour was the usual nice near black with a one finger off white head. Taste was very strong coffee with a nice bitter roasted malt aftertaste. Medium carbonation. Hides the alcohol well. Sparky27 (1567), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Apr 17, 2008 Bottle courtesy of fiver29. Pours a pitch black with a one finger tan head. Nose is cocoa, roasted malts and molasses. Palate is moderately creamy with chocolate, malt, vanilla and a touch of mild coffee coming through and a slight bite at the end. Alcohol is well-hidden in the taste, but it burns a bit in the back of the throat and is very warming. I actually like this better than the barrel aged version that I found to be really hot. Thanks John! Piggy (27), Chicago, Illinois, USA Apr 17, 2008 Thin solid off white head, dark in chocolate in color, smell roasty with lots of chocolate small amounts of bitterness, taste lots of chocolate coffee fill light alcohol finish MesandSim (5790), London, Greater London, England Apr 16, 2008 A Mes rate: Bottle at Tom’s UGT Pt. 2. Black as night with a thin but solid white head. Roasty malt aroma with huge chocolate notes and a delicate bitterness lurking in the background. Roasted pepper hits inititally in the mouth but is followed by some lovely chocolate giving a good bitter feel. Enjoyably dry. A Decent stout. Appearance: Very dark almost pure black. Creamy tanned head contribute to handsome look. Nose : Good, solid roasty nose. Hint of Arabica coffee, toasted malts and soft hops.7+ Flavor/Palate : Full bodied ale. Overwhelming richness of caramel with roasted barley. Heavy , soapy end. Alcohol finish was a bit coarse as well but does balance heavy malt side.
Pastor (509), Maine, USA Apr 12, 2008 Thanks to goryshkewych for this one
Bottle poured into my tulip glass produced a good fingers worth of tan head that quickly turns to a ring of lace around the glass the body of his brew was black with a little red around the edges
Aromas of roasted malts coffee and some hop flavor to it to it
It’s got a great hop presence in the flavors along with the roasted malts and a little bit of alcohol
Medium body not much carbonation on this so it makes it smooth going down
Sips really well, not a bad RIS would drink another one if I had it
JohnnyJ (1283), Carlsbad, California, USA Apr 11, 2008 This was a sub-par imperial stout. Pour is black with a small amount of light getting through the glass. The standard imp stout flavors: sweet chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, and fruit. The mouthfeel was certainly weak for the style. hiddenvariable (194), pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 8, 2008 bottle. pours a completely opaque black, with a relatively thin tan head that fades to a film and fades no more, leaving bits of lacing as the beer beneath disappears. i can smell this one from a foot away. roasted malt and cocoa dominate the smell, with a fairly strong molasses note, flecks of blackberry, and a pretty strong floral/citrus hop note. great roasted malt flavor dominates all the lesser inferior notes (i love roasty stouts). the molasses note is all but gone, and the cocoa is more subdued, but there is a hop spiciness here now, mingling well with the citrus/floral notes that also fade into the background some, leaving a sort of earthy woodiness as the initial flavors fade. this beer smells a lot fruitier and sweeter than it turns out tasting, and it works well. moderate bitter finish, with a perfect sweetness to balance. sticky, oily mouthfeel, perfect carbonation, and a body that’s more full than one thinks for how easily this seems to want to go away. i have a new favorite beer from this brewery. the strength of the hops’ role is surprising, but not unwelcome. it blends really well with the dominating dark malts. it tastes like a west coast impy. really good.
