TheBeerOrg (1563), Kentucky, USA Jun 24, 2006 Updated: Mar 3, 2008Pours an omnious shade of near black with a thin wispy tan head. Aroma of dark chocolate, fruity roasted malt, brown sugar. Taste is chocolate, roasted malt, vinous and spicy. Chocolate, pepper and plum. Full to heavy bodied, with smooth carbonation. Excellent imperial stout, and a great improvement over my last tasting. RagallachMC (631), Cleveland, Ohio, USA Jun 22, 2006 Bottle. Aroma: Coffee, vanilla, anise, dark cocoa, and a hint of brandy. Appearance: Dark, oily looking black. Small dark brown highlights when held to the light. Small dark tan head diminished rapidly into a small ring around the edge of the glass. Nice lacing. Flavor: Starts off with a roasted malt flavor with touches of vanilla, transitions into a dark fruit flavor on the middle of the tongue, and finishes with a slight bitterness which also holds flavors of coffee and alcohol. The flavors seem to move across the tongue from front to back. Also got hints of licorice and fresh grass in the flavor. Palate: Full bodied, but not as chewy as I would have liked. Seemed just a hair thinner than it should be. Alcohol was very subtle throughout. Overall: A very nice beer, and very enjoyable, but I think this bottle is too fresh. I’m going to age some and see how they do. holdenn (1432), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jun 22, 2006 Updated: Nov 13, 2006pours black with a tan head. aroma of coffee, alcohol, molasses. flavors of dark chocolate, and roastedness with a bitter alcohol finish. if they could up the gravity this beer would be even more enjoyable.
a few weeks ago we put a new one of these side by side with one aged a year. the aged was not suprisingly, much smoother with a sweeter finish. if you have the space, definitely age a few of them and you won’t regret it. ryan (1774), Beltsville, Maryland, USA Jun 21, 2006 Pours black with a small, fading, tan head. The aroma is heavy with pitted fruits in the Midwest Imperial Stout style, plenty of chocolate and roast, with some smoke, licorice and molases. Flavor is prunes and raisins drenched in dark chocolates. Lots of burnt and roastedness to balance out the sticky sweetness. Full bodied with moderate carbonation, yet fairly light on the palate. Well done. jedadiahcombs (41), Huntington, West Virginia, USA Jun 20, 2006 Dark color and nice head. Could be a little thicker and less hoppy but maybe a little aging wouldn’t hurt. bfeldmann (1042), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Jun 17, 2006 "Not bad needs to be aged. Poured a dark b black with nice tan head. Aroma was of coffee and chocolate. Flavor was of coco and coffee. Should have been a little more hops. " eaglefan538 (2355), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Jun 12, 2006 Pours a dark black color with a chocolate brown head, but weak lacing. Aroma of strong chocolate, some coffee, some dark fruits, not a lot of roastedness. Flavor was of dry cocoa beans, vinous notes, and some coffee. Interesting, ends bitter, but completely lacking hops. Significant carbonation but not a thick mouthfeel. I’d age this before going back, a little undeveloped. Erdinger2003 (127), Ames, Iowa, USA Jun 11, 2006 The head starts out beautiful with a lacing that clings to the glass nicely, really nice. Has a dark black color.
The smell has a plum flavor to it along with a sweet coffee smell.
Taste is smooth and sweet with some fruitiness. Dark fruit mixes with sweet dark chocolate.
The mouthfeel is excellent, creamy and smooth, very enjoyable.
I would like to have another one of these in the near future.
