I love the stories behind Great Lakes Brews. This one is no exception. Poured from bottle to snifter. Pours a deep black with a thin quickly dispersing head. Aroma of malts and smoke, almost a bacon scent underneath the malts. Crisp bitter taste of an imperial stout. A little thin considering 9% alcohol.

Bottle at home, thanks to an IP trade with Michael C, 12/05/13. Light black, extremely dark mahogony brown in the light, with a dirty tan head that soon clears to a swirl and thin edgework. Nose is roast malt, dark fruits, berry fruits, molasses, treacle toffee, tar, brown sugars, light chocolate. Taste comprises roast malts, dark fruits, light booze, licqourice, treacle tart, leather, brown sugars, chocolate backnote. Full end of medium bodied with well pitched fine carbonation keeping this 9%er very drinkable. Decent Impy stout but not top draw, alcohol is well balanced.

On tap. Black with a finger-wide tan head, good lacing. Aroma is expected - roasted malts, coffee, slight smoke. Flavor is much of the same but with sweet caramel and chocolate notes. A bit on the cloying side, sticky, good carbonation level.

Black pour, tan head. Roasty and chocolatey, and some bitterness is present in the flavor. It’s an enjoyable imperial stout.

12 oz bottle (4/20/2012) poured into a snifter. Seemed to pour lighter than expected for the style. Half inch thick khacky head. Aroma of sweet roasted malt, burnt sugar and some booze off in the distance. Immediately sweet on the tongue which fades into dark fruit, most noticeably raisin. Chewy malt finish with a tinge of hops lingering. A bit thinner than expected for an imperial, but tasty none the less! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

It doesn’t seem imperial, but it is a marvelous stout with chocolate and roasted character to spare. Forget about style, because this beer is incredibly enjoyable.

Bottle. Black pour with tan head with a lot of lacing. Smells of sweet and roasted malts. Tastes sweet at first then a lingering dark chocolate/coffee bitterness. Good stout. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours predictably pretty dark black but does have a hint of ruby red with no head and a thin ring of lacing. Smells of milk chocolate, raisin, roasted coffee, dark bready malts, soy sauce, some pine. Taste starts with raisin, some dark chocolate, coffee. Then get more raisin, as well as plum, some pine, some breadiness. Then the finish includes, a little pine or grapefruit, roasted malt, some coffee, milk chocolate, little heat, some carmel, little soy sauce, maybe some licorice but I could just be imagining that. Pretty complex with a full body and a creamy and slick mouthfeel. Good amount of carbonation, but too much in my opinion. This is a very solid imperial stout that is on the verge of world class.
