3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Pours black with a thin brown head. Aroma is full roasted malt, coffee, light chocolate and just a slight hint of licorice. Flavor begins with light sweet chocolate and a bit of sweet grain, but coffee and roasted malts lead to a more powerful finish.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Sexy pour -- pitch black, solid, tight tan head. The aroma is darn near that of chocolate milk. Drinks with a nice solid character of baking chocolate, too ... and swift kick in the rear with it’s warming alcohol. Excellent night cap. (#3644, 8/17/2009)

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
(12oz bottle best by 8-14-10 thanks to Exiled) clear medium brown with ruby highlights. Nice head and lacing. Nose of coffee, sweet chocolate, mild vanilla, and toasty chocolate malt. Taste of bakers chocolate, mildly sweet, toasty caramel and dark brown sugar with licorice laced in. Creamy but watery body, nice carbonation. A bit too much linger of anise for my liking.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: JUL 4, 2005 On tap at the Maple Tree Inn: Deep black with a towering brown head, this baby is profuse with dark rich aromas - - - bittersweet chocolate, roasted barley, burnt coffee... The taste is more of the same, with a generous daubing of anise and alcohol added to the blend. This drink would be a fine accompanyment with rich chocolate puddings or spicy pork sausages, especially served later in the day.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
This imperial stout pours a deep eclipse black color from a 12oz bottle. Small to medium sized beige head. Aroma is chocolate, roasty malts, vanilla, and some hops. A medium to full bodied imperial stout. Malts are roasty and chocolate, touch of vanilla. Hops are earthy and floral. Nice balance. Hints of coffee and roasty malts throughout, which intensifies as it warms. Nice stout perhaps a touch sweet. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and dry. Aftertaste is slightly bitter with some malt sweetness.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Poured thick black with a little tan ring of head, aroma is full of chocolate and coffee tones. Taste is right with sweet chocolate and toffee, that leads into a nice coffee and smoky aftertaste that does finish sweet. A great impy stout!

4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
12 oz. bottle from Keller’s IGA. It’s late April, and they still have some on the shelves. Pours a really dark opaque brown with a tiny tan head that leaves a little on the beer all the way down. Aroma is not as big and roasty as I’d expected or would like, though it does get stronger as it warms. Notes of roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, smoked wood, and alcohol. Flavor builds upon that, very rich, with notes of roasted malts, smoked wood, coffee, chocolate, nuts, brown sugar, and some dark fruits that aren’t really apparent in the nose. The alcohol is better masked in the flavor than the aroma. Full-bodied, with an oily mouthfeel that coats the mouth. Finishes roasty, with some sweetness. The roast lingers. Really awesome beer, though I do prefer the BA Blackout Stout; the barrel makes this even better.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Clear dark brown with a frothy head. Aroma is dry blackened malts with dark cocoa. Smooth light/medium body. Nice flavors of black malts, cocoa, with some coffee bitterness to finish. Like their Fitz porter a bit better than this.
