Commercial Description:
A Russian Imperial Stout with a hearty malt body and bold hop flavor.
Named after the infamous "Blackout of 2003" that left the northeastern United States in complete darkness, but resulted in old-fashioned neighborhood porch parties and fun.
Available in February & March.

12oz bottle from Drewbeerme. Pours a not too thick looking dark brown/black color with a thin tan head with just a touch of lace. Smells dark and roasty fruity. The fruity sweetness on the nose was a bit of a surprise but was very good. Tastes awesome, a great blend of the thick fruity sweetness and the roasty toasty grainy malty flavors. Sweet up front and then biting and bitter toasty through the middle to the finish. Full bodied, light syrupy with good carbonation. Best stout I’ve had in a long time.

Sampled at Flour City Brewers’ Fest, Rochester NY. AU15/08.

App.: Black with ruby tones, small light mocha head. Aroma: Delicious milk chocolate, medium-roasted coffee, hints of vanilla, a bit ashen, slightly fruity (grapes). Palate: Medium body, moderate effervescence. Flav.: Big chocolate and coffee, soy sauce savoury, some minerals, a touch of wood and alcohol; fairly sweet but in balance with the bitterness, coffee and burnt sugar linger.

Big beer, nice stuff, highlight of the festival for me.

Sampled at the Flour City Brewers’ Fest 2008. Great Lakes Blackout Stout is a reddish black ale with a leathery, brown sugar colored head. The aroma is of licorice, dark roast coffee, mint and alcohol. It is full bodied and creamy in the mouth. The finish is dry. The flavor has notes of alcohol, licorice, chocolate and black currant. It kind of reminds me of Old Rasputin. I think this was the highlight of the Brewers’ Fest.
